From 55 to 57 in cars, and well up into the 60s in trucks, they were the motor mount location. Same for the matching pair on the other side.

Since the late 60s, they have been the smog pump bracket mount location.

The upper one goes RIGHT DIRECTLY INTO the passage that the fuel pump drive rod passes through. That's why it leaks oil. Put a SHORT bolt in it, with a drop of silicone on the threads.

That's probably the single most common new-motor "mystery" oil leak; it leaks while racing or accelerating or even just cruising, or otherwise at high RPMs, but not at idle. It gets oil all over the lower right side of the engine bay, the underside of the headers on that side, on top of the mech fuel pump, and all down the side of the block. The oil drips off the block and gets slung everywhere as a fine mist by the crank damper.

Another time that it appears, especially on this BBS these days with the kind of people that alot of these cars have passed into the ownership of, is when people have just hacked off their smog pump, usually because they think they're "cleaning up the engine bay". What a crock. They take off the bracket, and suddenly there's this leak.

It's AMAZING how many people will show up here with that problem, and INSIST that THEIR bolt hole is different from everybody else's, that that's not where THEIR leak is. They'll argue with the fact for days on end. BS.

I don't recall that there's anything there (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). A fuel pump replacement trick is to thread a longer bolt into the upper hole to hold the fuel pump push rod in place--much easier than the grease method.

slightly unrelated, but i have a fuuny story about that hole. i swapped in a holley pump a while back and used a bolt to hold the pump pushrod in place while i did the swap. i got everything all finished and forgot to swap out the long bolt for a short one. started right up, let it run for a few seconds and backed out of the garage just in time for the car so starve out and die. i was like "WTF ? is the new bad, damnit" so i got all bummed out, got a friend to help push it back into the garage and went to start taking the pump off when i noticed the bolt. i felt like an idiot.
