Got a quote recently from Carlquist competition engines in CT recently and just wanted to see if anyone here saw something outrageous in the quote.

I have a 2pc rear main 2 bolt 81 350 block that I wanted to 383 with a very mild street cam (210/240 @ .050) should make around 300RWHP.

Anyway he quoted $1176 for the following:

Wash and MAG block, lapp deck, new cam bearings, freeze & oil plugs, Bore and hone .030 over with torque plate, balance rotating assembly, install rods on pistons, clearance block for stroker and rods for camshaft and check main and rod bearing clearances.

Does that sound right -- he didnt itemize, just listed like I did and said the 1176 number.

I also asked him for a quote on a rotating assembly and he said he would do an eagle forged crank, Scat forged 4340 rods and speed pro pistons. I have heard bad things about Scat - should I be worried? I am not in a rush as the motor is not even out yet -- I am just checking for early.

Note this:That's SUPER time-consuming. Machine work costs BY THE HOUR; the more hours somebody has to sit there with a die grinder doing stuff like this, and assembling/disassembling stuff to check their work, the higher the bill.

It seems pretty reasonable to me, actually.

 

Yeah -- The guy has done heads for me in the past and they were done well so I inherently trust the guy more than someone Ive never talked to.

That is not out of line. Quality machine work cost money.

 

I think I paid about $1200 just to have the short block machined and assembled with all the parts I supplied. Rebuilding the heads was extra then I finished assembling the long block myself. My rotating assembly was balanced for around $500

As mentioned above, there's a lot of labor involved and repeated assemble and disassemble to check measurements.

I think that $1176 is far too low for what you're getting. When you drop everything off at the machine shop, don't expect to see it finished for at least 4 weeks. Probably closer to 8 weeks.

all in all took about 5 weeks but that was because the oil pan I asked for was the wrong part in the right box and they had to send it back and get another.

total was just over 4000 for all the machine work and parts including a cam kit and valvetrain stuff. all part prices were better than or about the same as summit.

Sounds good... it's encouraging to hear of somebody getting a satisfactory job at a fair price, instead of getting the shaft some way or other!

Its ALIVE!!!!

It took me a couple trys to set the timing but eventually I got it to run right. Sounded good.

It got to 200 real quick but I kept an eye on it and shut it down. Only took about 10 minutes. In that time I set the timing, idle mixture screws and filled the coolant.

Next time Ill fill the trans to full and check the advance. I am going to have to wait till tommorow to start it again though -- long but funny story.

A month ago when I was assembling the internals I had this quart of oil with the top cut off for dipping stuff in oil. Well I kicked it and the oil went all over the headers which happened to be sitting near the stand. I didnt forget this today when I started it but wholy CRAP did it smoke. I remember cleaning them as much as I could but they were rusty and I guess they held alot of the oil I spilled. I had the extinguisher ready and in hand for a minute there cause I thought the oil might catch but it didnt.

Anyway tommorow is round 2 where I will start and run to temp a couple more times then drain the oil and put the front wheels back on so I can drive it.
