MSD Ingnition

What are the benifits of putting the MSD Inginition in my car? Right now my car runs good so how can this improve the operation of my car? I see a lot of people have them. Should I change anything else at the same time?

Unless you're running a modified engine at higher cylinder pressures or higher speeds where the stock ignition system has trouble igniting the mixture, there's no benefit to be had from an upgraded ignition.

I've got a Crane Fireball multi-spark ignition... Big waste of money... It has a rev-limiter, but so does the ECM... No difference in performance if I unplug it or otherwise... If there is a difference, you definately won't notice it... 99% chance that the money could be spent better elsewhere..

The factory ignition on these cars is pretty damn good...

Reading this post amazed me!!

When I first installed an MSD 6A box on my '81 Elcamino with a dead stock 3.8L V6, I barely noticed a difference in horse power. But there was about a 2-3 MPG gain, and when it came time for smog, it passed cleaner than before. Then I intstalled that same box on my '82 T/A, with a stock LG4 and there I did notice a seat of the pants difference as well as the increase in miliage. I built a 350 for the T/A, but didn't put it back on the street. I installed that 350 into my '73 Nova (with the same MSD box), and that thing pulls to 7000 rpms with out hesitation. I recently bought another MSD 6A and the Blaster coil, installed them both into my Formula, and I really didn't believe the power difference. Yeah, I do have a built 383, but at all pedal positions, as well as higher rpms, there is a huge power increase. I'm still getting the tuning down, (I recently had to replace the relays for the MAF) but the MSD is definately worth getting.

As for the Crane Fireball, yeah, it is a waste of money. They just don't have the output that the MSD does.

Noticing an improvement after installing an aftermarket ignition on a stock engine is a sign that your stock components were worn out. Replacing them with new stock components would have produced the same results.

I'd mount it under the dash because it will look like **** wherever you put it under the hood.

I have to agree with whats been posted as to the benefits on a stock car. Ignition boxes are good where a stand alone ignition system is needed. Like on a carb conversion where all the stock wiring, ECM, etc. is removed. Mount the box, wire 12v to it and plug in the distributor. Doens't get easier. Putting it on your car would be a waste.
