over timing can lead to what?
im sure if i searched hard enough.. i know i know... i just put on a new intake on my early style 350.. torker 2 and edelbrock 600 cfm... went smooth but i just set the timing some where" good enough" and took it out... heard the "3 rocks in a coffee can sound" and kept on pushin now i hear a faint upper tap in the driver side bank... so i over timed it and had detonation... now what did i bend??? usually valve or pushrod?? whats the best way to tackle it/find out???? i know im an idiot...

probably pounded a bearing out of it....
use a hose and stick one end to your ear and move the other end around the engine while its running to help pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

i have blown a few bearings and it doesnt sound like that it had alot of detonation and i knew i was pushin my luck... comin from just under the intake on the drivers side #5 and i have pivot ball manual clutch linkage and i can feel somethin very faint in the clutch pedal... when you detonate do you usually bend a pushrod or valve?

You bend a pushrod or valve when the piston hits an open valve. That's not detonation.
Detonation can break rings and melt holes in the tops of pistons and in (aluminum) cylinder heads. If the engine is detonating heavily, for God's sake get your foot off the gas.
Detonation used to destroy the old air cooled piston aircraft engines. That's why they ran them with super high octane gas and with water/alcohol injection.

it could be just a coinkidink, but you may have a calved lifter. But it wouldnt be from deto.
Like stated above, deto pounds out bearings and melts aluminum!

ok now i just went to the shop and took the valve cover off and had it runnin... i can hear tap in the back by #5 and 7 so i start feelin around while its runnin and those are sloppy feelin so i tighten them and the noise goes away...until it revs up a lil then starts to come back... so i pull the rocker off and to my surprise the furthest back pushrod feels like theres a hydraulic lifter under it.. little backround info, bought the motor from an old harley dude someone knew.. had 2 intakes a performer rpm and a victor jr. had hydraulic lifters installed but came with solids also... i was maybe 18 and my car just blew... so i bought it and had my buddy put it in.but it was fresh in a motor bag on a homemade engine stand stored meticulously but been there a while..they took out the hydraulic lifters and dropped in the solids saying"they were better for stick shift" and put on the performer rpm... never again did i see the lifters or intake....so i wonder if i just stumbled on one lifter they forgot to swap to solid.....i took others apart and they are solid but that one i can push down on the pushrod and theres a 1/4 inch of dampened movement then it hits a bottom and when i let it go it comes back up...so this is gettin wierd... gotta swap cam and lifters im guessin..is that how hydraulic lifters feel ?

I'd be a bit worried about what kind of deal you've got. Lifters aren't something you just swap on a whim.

i know the deal was shady but the combo has been running no problem for 3 years now... daily driver... and i was 18 now im 26 and this is what i got to work with... now can i just buy new lifters and put them all in with my cam or do i gotta swap the cam?... is that how a hydraulic lifter feels if you push a pushrod into it... springy?

A hydraulic lifter with no oil in it can feel that way.
At this point, you should probably replace the cam, since you've got no way of knowing what it really is.

Thats the best way to do it.
If the lifters they dropped in there werent brand new then chances are they chewed up that cam too.
You 'could' drop new lifters in there and get away with it, but really you have no way of knowing what that cam is or what its been through. It will be a good time to upgrade anyways!
