Getting an Engine to Rebuild

hey im going to get a 3.1 to rebuild and put in inplace of the 2.8, just wondering what vehicles have a 3.1 that would be compatible with my camaro 82.

when i go to the scrapyard to buy an engine to rebuild, is there anything i should makesure that isnt wrong with the engine, or will anything thats wrong just end up getting fixed in the rebuild?

not sure if this is a dumb one, but as long as i keep a v6 i dont need to change the transmission right?

when people rebuild their engines to they do cylinder work, and rebore the engine themselves, of do they get mechanics to do it?

The 3.1 and 2.8 use the same block, so if you were replacing the crank and pistons you could turn a 2.8 into a 3.1. Sort of the way a 350 can be made into a 383.

You can't bore the cylinders yourself, that needs to be done by a machine shop.

The 3.1 from 90, 91, or 92 is from a Camaro or Firebird...

ask for a decent running engine; they are usually 200 to 300 bucks and strapped to a pallet at most wrecking yards... if they still have it in a car so that you can hear it run that is even better... a decent running engine will just need freshening up, you will be able most likely to re-use your crankshaft, connecting rods, roller lifters, engine block, cylinder heads, and valves...

Your current transmission will work fine...

The above "re-useable" parts will need to be machined by a good machine shop if you determine that they need it... if you carefully measure everything and compare the numbers to the specifications in your repair manual then you will know what will last and what won't

Your typical rebuild kit should include pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, timing set, camshaft, oil pump and freeze plugs...

don't forget to rebuild or exchange your factory 2.8 distributor for another 2.8 distributor for your 82 Camaro and now is also the time to either rebuild or exchange your carburetor...

good luck...
----------
You don't want to use a 1982 2.8 block... the oiling passages are inferior and will cause crank bearing failure after an extended period of time...

Re-read my last post...

I would suggest getting a COMPLETE used engine from 1987 through 1995; my old V6 manual says that the factory 87-up fuel injected engines have the best heads and cams from the factory and really run well with the older setup put straight to them...

Remember, these are just suggestions, someone else may have a better idea...
