305 TBI problem

My battery died, so i jumped the car and it worked fine, my battery died again this time you would turn it on then it would turn right off, like you had to keep your foot on the gas pedal to keep the car going... ive been told i need a new fuel filter? But i do know i need a new battery

Thanks

hmm maybe theres a circuit thats staying always on that kills your battery all the time?? or possibly if you install a new battery and does the same its either something draining or maybe alternator just maybe lol

Do you have a multi meter? If you do what you do is unhook the positive battery cable from the battery and connect the multimeter inline with it, turn it on the amps setting. close doors take key out of ignition and unhook the underhood lamp. if you have a amp reading of 50 milli amps or more then somethings draining it. get back with your results and eliminate that possibility.

No the battery is not my concern here, it is that the car wont stay started and run properly, i know i need a new battery and i need to solve some wiring issues with the cooling fan but this happens when i first start the car up, is the fuel filter right next to the air filter and it has a pipe leading into it from some where below it?

well i think the fuel filter is behind the motor it should have metal lines going to and from the fuel filter

yes it is far behind the motor.... under the car about 12-15 in. forward of the rear axle it looks sorta like a tin can on its side with fitings on both ends as it is a inline filter

it is very easy to replace there is a bracket mounting it to the car... one bolt to loosen then the fitings on each end slide it out slide the new one in and reverse removal...

i cant really tell you if it will fix all your problems as it is very hard to tell what they are...
you start your car. and it shuts off after how long? couple seconds a minute instantly? what does your Oil pressure read? sure you have gas? think it is good gas? could you be loosing spark or do you think it is fuel? have you tested fuel pressure while it is running and as it shuts off? how does it run before shutting off? eratic? smooth? rough?

In order you asked the questions,

Instantly(without foot on gas), Oil Pressure gauge broken(just got oil change), Had about little above a quarter, Not sure it is the cheapest, Never tested fuel pressure i would say when i did get it to go around the block that was the worst ride of my life( i floored it and nothing append just felt like a flinstone car, but as i went around the block it gradually got better.

well i would replace the oil pressure sending unit asap the reason i asked is if you dont have atleast 4psi of oil pressure i think it shuts the fuel pump down which could explain why you need your foot on the gas... to prove that is it you need to check fuel pressure with the car off and system primed then while running and after taking your foot off the gas

So if this is a oil pressure problem is it the place that did the oil changes liability? Or is it mine because the sending unit is messed up?

that probably depends on if the sending unit was working before they did the oil change

No offense man but you really should take it somewhere for the fuel filter unless your comfortable working on your car. Its easy to do though if you decide to, just make sure you relieve the fuel pressure or you'll be soaked with gas.

As far as your initial problem the best thing to do is buy a battery and put it in and then see if it still does it.

Alright i tried it again this morning jumped it started it up barely reved but then reved it up to 20 rpms and then released my foot from the pedal and it stayed, i got out of my car and after 25 seconds it turned off, and i could see that my battery had lost juice already so i let it charge again then i tryed to start it up once, twice and on the third time it was like it had almost no battery left, on the first start it felt normal except for it not starting

I would get a new battery first, then worry about your other problems

Alright, so i did this process over and over again and evetually it got to the point where it could idle steadily on its own, i also backed it up and down the drive way so it seems that it just needs to be broken in and it hates the cold whether, but a new battery is my first priority.
