question about the zz4 cam ?
i did a search but just couldnt find the exact answer i was looking for i was wondering if i can use my stock valve springs (97 305 5 speed) with the zz4 cam or if i will run into any problems ? this is kinda an off topic question but is there a ecu controlled rev limit on my car ?

"Run into" is a pretty good way to put it. As in, your springs will run into themselves, and most likely the retainers will run into the top of the guides.
Pulling the heads is the only way you're going to be able to modify them to take the ZZ4 lift.

You might be able to get away with a .050" offset lock set.

Agreed but his spring seat pressure will probably really tank. He would also have to check the valve seal for clearance. If that would clear then with aftermarket springs with more pressure he would have a decent setup.
its interesting.

I assume you meant '87 valve springs.

Forget the stock springs, they're barely good enough for a stock cam. Springs are cheap, like $80 maybe eh? I think of it this way, 3 tanks of gas. That's cheap for a performance upgrade. Always think in tanks of gas.

Im dumb when it comes to cams. I been wanting to swap a bigger cam in my 87 IROC and was thinking of a ZZ4 since alot use it here. As far as springs go, willing swapping to ZZ4 springs do? What I mean is will ZZ4 springs fit the heads or does some modifying need to be done?

There was an awesome article in this month's chevy high performance mag about cam selection. Basically what it came down to was that unless you factor every part of your engine into the cam you use, you could be throwing good money away. Just because the zz4 cam runs well in 350s with vortec heads and a carb does not mean that it will pull even close to the same numbers as your stock 87 engine. In fact, I would be willing to bet that it would cause a loss of low end torque and power. Here's the link to an older article along the same lines, you will feel your brain growing with every paragraph. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...camshaft_info/
Hope this helps, squid.

Whatever you say squid
If they wear dog bowls, white clothes all year, and tuck their "caps" into their waist bands, they are squids, even if they do wear bumble bees. What is that they say... "United States Marine Corps, MENS Department of the Navy"
