Odd size plug in vortec head? Need help bad!
Ok, I get the first head torqued down and I go to remove the plug in the side of the head where the electric fan switch threads into the head.
You all know the kind of plug I'm talking about right... sits nearly flush with the head, has an indented square hole in it like a 3/8 rachet fits down into, very similar to the plug on the differential or one like you may use on an intake manifold.
Well, the square in the plug is smaller than 3/8 drive ratchet and bigger than a 1/4 drive ratchet. Does anyone know what size this is and where can I get a bit to fit down in it? Metric? Probably $35 at the chevy dealership and would have to be ordered?
Obviously this would have been much easier to handle before the head was torqued down, but too late. I saw the plug and didn't think anything of it. Looks like a 3/8 when you just glance at it.
There is not one in the other head to carry somewhere to find the right bit. Don't want to remove the head, don't really want to move the fan switch.
Any ideas??? Please help.
Thanks!

try using an "easy out" they're tapered and already hardened .That or youv'e got to grind something to fit but because it's not hard it might twist off . If it does try again and sooner or later it will come out . Just another of the Generals surprises.

I know exactly what you're talking about, we ran into the same problem when my brother and I went to install his fan switch. He spent like 5 minutes making a piece of metal to fit in and busted it loose by turning it with some vise grips. I have no idea what size it actually is though.

um yeah stick with the allen wrenches you will be able to find one that fits perfect... that way you wont screw the inside up with an easy out and still not be able to get it out...

get a 3/8" rachet extention and grind down each of the four sides of the square business end till it just fits nice and snug with a light tap with a hammer. Don't force it.
