TPI to carb issues????
TPI to carb issues????
ok try and keep up with me on this one. The stock L98 went to the big engine heaven in the sky. So I pulled my race motor out of my 1987 Blazer to put in my Camaro. Now the Blazer motor has the fuel pump on the side where as my TPI motor had an intake fuel pump. Now i know there are ways of by-passing everything. Want i am curious to know is......there a way to somehow disconnect the fuel pump and use the fuel lines already there to make the new motor pur in my baby. MAybe disconnect the fusible link and run some gas lines to my old exist and hook it up to the fuel pump on my drag motor? I dunno.......so confused.

pull down the tank and make a pickup. reuse your lines and use that mechanical pump of the motor. fabing this up is not that hard and really should be done.
I have done this and the hardest part is exhaust removal and the rear end is in the way. after that the tank coming down and removing the fuel pump is easy.

You could also get a FPR that will drop the pressure to what is needed for the carb.

The right way to do it is to remove the in tank pump and make a new pickup. Mallory just came out with a pick up that takes the place of the stock sending unit. It doesn't get any easier than that. Part number is 4205 and it has a -8 feed and -6 return. Install it and run new lines to the pump. I would personally use an external in-line electric pump.
Re: TPI to carb issues????
ok i was hoping to leave the pump in the tank and somehow to disconnect it. Maybe tap into the lines and make the pump on the block work without having to drop this or that ya know. I wanting this to be as painless as possible since im wanting my 11 second slip so i can have an excuse for a stronger rear end and cage finally
----------
yea i looked the MAllory pump up and it is like 100 bucks which I didnt feel like spending as of right now.

You're not going to be able to suck enough fuel through the innactive OEM pump to feed the engine. You could try a regulator to knock the pressure down low enough for a carb, but usually getting the pressure set right so that the engine runs right without flooding or starving for fuel is a pain. The quick easy fix would be to swap the pickup in the tank with one from a carbureted car.

I personally would not run an external electric pump do to the whine and noise it will create. I would not leave the pump in their either. take it out and do it right. Find some friends to help, that way in the future when the mechanical pump fails its super easy to fix.

Sounds like you want the $12 solution. Make a loop from the existing supply and return lines on the car with a "T" in the middle with a hose that leads to the mechanical fuel pump on the block. Supply a turn-on circuit to the F/P relay so the in-tank pump runs at key-on. The tank pump will free flow and make fuel available to the mechanical pump. This setup should only be used for testing as the plumbing will an invitation to "flame-on". This is NOT the correct way to do it permanently.

Because you're not going to be sucking fuel through a dead pump. It restricts the flow.
If you'remaking enough power to run 11's then you're going to want to take the in tank pump out. When I first dropped the new motor in my car I had the stock TPI pump in it with an external Mallory pump. The lines inside the tank were too small, combined with having to suck the fuel through the dead pump severely cut down the amount of fuel making it to the motor. Leaving it in the tank is just a half *** way to do somthing. That's not how you build a race car.

Re: TPI to carb issues????
Its not hard at all to remove the tank, the only problem i had was that the filler tube kept hitting a lip when i took it out. I bent the lip b4 i put the tank back in and it made everything 10x easier. Can probly get the tank out in 15 minutes now.

I also found that the aftermarket pumps will suck the rubber lines shut. I had a car at the shop that was "built" by another local shop that left the pump in the tank. The rubber lines up near the fuel tank were being sucked closed from the suction of the high output pump. Another thing to consider.

I wasnt talking about leaving it in and sucking through it, I was talking about ditching the mechanical pump and using the electric already in the tank.

Re: TPI to carb issues????
Ok, sorry. In that case you'll need a bypass regulator like a mallory 4309 and the plumbing to make it work.
