HIGH PERFORMANCE CAM

I HAVE A 1990 FIREBIRD WITH 5.0 LITER THROTTLE BODY INJECTION, IF I INSTALL A HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMSHAFT, WILL I HAVE TO REPROGRAM THE ECM TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT?

Not if you do it wisely, I can tell you how to get 250 HP/340 TQ without touching the computer. I have done it a couple of times now on L03 TBI trucks that had factory roller cams.

You have your stock TBI 305 truck engine that makes 180 HP/265 TQ.

1 5/8" primary tube headers, 3" collectors, into dual 2 1/2" pipes, Y'd into a single 3" cat and 3" muffler.

Stock heads at the stock compression ratio

1996-2002 Vortec 305/350 truck roller camshaft, it is much improved over the peaunut cam and has a narrower Lobe seperation angle than the LT1 cam does.

1.6:1 roller rockers"

Stock intake manifold with a 1" tall open center spacer

Ultimate TBI moded TBI unit, set the fuel pressure at 14 psi

Set the timing at 6*

If you have an automatic get one of the B&M or Transgo governor recalibration kits and setup the WOT shift to give you 5,000 rpm shifts.

In my experience, automatic TBI 305 trucks will dyno right at 200 RWHP/290 RWTQ with these modifications.

That is 70HP/65TQ without touching the tuning.

You ended your post with " In my experience, automatic TBI 305 trucks will dyno right at 200 RWHP/290 RWTQ with these modifications"

Tell me how a TBI truck motor will make 50hp/50tq less than the same motor in a car...?

Re: HIGH PERFORMANCE CAM

Call comp cams or crane cams techline.....Tell them what you have and they will recommend the best cam for what you have and even tell you if you need to modify the computer. Research your engine a little, like the induction system, valve sizes, if you have an exhaust....

You are the textbook n00b (not meant as a put down), the hole goes deeper then you think.

I believe he is saying they will get the 250 at the wheels, which would be 70 more than the 180 it was rated at the flywheel stock. still seems like a lot of work for a little gain though.
