Worth it to switch cam and intake?

I have a 305 with
  • 416 heads
  • 1 5/8 headers with dual exhaust
  • performer intake and cam
  • 600 cfm holley
I was thinking of switching to a cam in the 220@ .050 range and a performer rpm intake. The car runs well now with the 2200 stall and 3.42 gears. It is done at 4800-5000 rpm, I would like to pull to 5600-6000 rpm.

Would it be worth the couple hundred $$$$. What gain could I see?

I was thinking of the comp 262 or 268 XE. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Worth it to switch cam and intake?

Have you ported your heads? That's a really good modification to do to support the rest of your planned/current changes.

I think you're definately on the right track, with mods already done, and mods to come. Xe268 is what i'd recommend. The xe262 might be a bit better for your 2200RPM stall speed, but the 268 might give a bit more top end charge.

Definately worth the cash for the intake and cam. Not sure what stock cam you have, but i'd guess 30HP or more if you've ported the heads.

Re: Worth it to switch cam and intake?

Sorry, I forgot to say the Performer Cam is what I have now, 204 and 214@.050. There is some very light porting done where the valves enter the bowl area. I was hoping that with a XE268 and RPM intake I would be at 300 horses??? My compression is 9 to 1. Thanks for your knowledgable answer Sonix.

Yea, I think you might be in about that ballpark. That should all work real nice together.

Re: Worth it to switch cam and intake?

I put a 268XE cam in my old 305 with stock gasketmatched 416s. Never made it to the track but i did race my friends low 14 sec car. I had stock stall and it would bog real bad off the launch. When i raced him about halfway through second gear i was at his rear bumper catching him quick. We had to let off because we were running out of road.

It is a great cam, with your stall you shouldent have any problems. My car would start pulling hard at 2k, anything under that it would bog bad because of the stock stall tho.
