Car won't start
Car won't start
I'm desperate. My 89 IROC 350/5.7L has been having troubles the past few months. The car would start and run great then when I shut the car off it would not start back up. It eventually got worse. I have troubleshot and have replaced the PCM, fuel pump, filter, fuel injectors, replaced gaskets in the plenum. and the dang thing still won't start. The car had a major tune up a year ago involving new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. I'M AT A LOSS NOW. I'm thinking Catalytic Convertors. HELPPP

The car cranks it starts up...runs...then after shut off won't start up again for about an hour or so.. It does crank over. Had a diag done at the dealer first they stated the fuel pump was bad then the PCM...then they told me I had 4 bad fuel injectors and a vacuum leak at the plenum. I replaced everything and it still is like that.

HA.......I am having the same issue. In fact, my car is sitting down town right now. I drove down town to run some errands, started fine, ran fine, shut it off for 15mins and then it would not start. Just cranks. Every now and then, it'll seem like it wants to fire, but it doesn't. I had this one other time since i pulled it out of storage, at work. I went out at break, would not start, after work 4 hrs later, it fired right up. Seems to me like it is getting loaded up on fuel. Y? i don't know, but I can smell it while it is rollin over.

Re: Car won't start
It was in storage since November. I had stabilizer in it and when I got it out I filled it up with 93 octane. Maybe some of that old fuel is still in it. I just got back from getting it, it sat for 50 min and fired right up. As soon as I got back with it, I got my buddies timing light and checked it. It is running 6*, What do you guys all run for timing. Does that sound about right?

Well Since I put the engine back together after replacing the fuel injectors the car started...hissed then I shut it off to check where the hissing was coming from and it hasn't started since. Today I replaced the spark plugs, distributo Cap and rotor still nothing...By me taking off the fuel rail do I need some starter fluid since it was drained dry? If so where do I put it in at? Or maybe a bad distributor cause when I was replcing the Rotor...the old one was rusted fast to the distributor and the part below the rotor was chipping off because of rust. Anyone have any ideas?

Have your ignition module checked. It's free.
Pull out an ohmmeter and check the resistance of all your injectors cold and hot. Write the numbers down.
You do not need to put starting fluid in anything after draining the fuel rail. The fuel pump will still pump through. It'll just take a tad bit longer.

Well thanks for all the help replaced the distributor, MAF sensor (about 700 more dollars) rechecked the plug wires, Didn't know you weren't supposed to use RTV in the plenum...Luckily someone pointed that out to me and it didn't do any damage. and after all that replacing WALLLAAAA It cranked started and sounds like a dream. THANKS AGAIN to everyone who helped check out the link below for a pic of my ride.
