speedo stopped working

Hey my dad asked me to ask u guys this...
he has a 82 trans am and when he is going slow.. the speedo bounces alittle. but when he gets going very fast it just stops moving all together
but it used 2 work just fine... what could be th problem??

First of all. The 82 has a cable driven Speedo. If you have Cruise control then the cable goes through a transducer attached to the front part of the Driver side fender. It looks like this: It probably needs replaced. It also might need new speedo cables.

I have an 82 Camaro and I had a similar problem a long time ago ( I am the original owner). There are plastic drive pins on the ends of ths speedo cable at the cruise control transducer and one of mine finally broke.

Any way in the photo above on the left side, the top threaded connection is for the cable from the crusie control to the speedo on the clusteer. The bottom threaded connection is for the cable to the transmission.

If you do not have crusie control, the cable runs directly from the transmission to the engine side of the firewall, up the firewall and then through the firewall to the speedo.
