rear differential

alright so the gears in the rearend of my camaro (86 iroc-z) went out on me the other day. the rearend i had in was positive traction with disk brakes. i decided not to rebuild the one i have when i found out the price (1500$) so i found a rearend out of a 87 iroc-z that's "slip resistant" and it has drum brakes. i know that you still have the same master cylinder with either drum or disk but i was wondering if it was possible to switch them over so i could keep the disk brakes. also wondering how much i'm gonna loose in the performance area since i'm not gonna have positive traction anymore?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: rear differential

No, you cannot use the same MC & PV for drums if you have the crappy cast-iron Saginaw calipers, as your 86 does unless someone has swapped a 90-up one into it.

Explain this about the gears "went out". They're usually pretty well secure in there; they don't often just "go out" like for a stroll or something.

"Positive traction" is just a different way to spell "slip resistant". No loss there.

Re: rear differential

I cant believe that you are looking at 1500 to rebuild the rear. Find out what exactly is wrong in the rear, you may not need a gearset, the repair may be cheaper than a full rebuild.

Re: rear differential

ok well this is what happened... in detail.... i had been racing and playing around in the camaro cus that's what you do in a kickass car. so in the end the rear end went out when i say this i'm talking like gears got stripped, the front seal on it shattered, the back u-joint shattered, and the driveshaft was shoved about an inch and a half into the transmission. i was also able to move the drive shaft from left to right about 3 inches if not more. when i slowly drove it to the shop the gears kept slipping with what teeth were left on them. also to follow up on the whole using the same MC. it is the same one for drum or disk i asked the chevy house and they told me that the lines and everything are the exact same (which they are i already checked). i've heard from a few mechanic friends that i can just take the whole shaft and everything out from teh differential and slide them into the new(used) rear end as long as the gears on the ends of the shafts were ok.

Re: rear differential

the PV IS NOT THE SAME on the drum setups
that chevy house... LIED

you could reuse the axles as long as the you have the same spline carrier Ie 28, 26...and as long as they werent damaged

but i am confussed how do you "shatter" a U-joint and still drive the car?

but let me take a wild guess as to what you were doing when this happened...

5k drop with the e-brake on right...

If you don't know anything about cars, why wouldn't you? J/K...believe it or not I was a kid too...when I first started playing with high performance cars; those things happen when you don't realize all machines have relative limits. You should be able to keep the disc rear and get her back on the road for less than $1500.
