601 heads
Hey guys. I'm looking to get some heads for my 400 small block. I was originally looking to get some dart iron eagle 215cc but a guy in my town is selling a set of worked over heads (I know the guy personally, and he's not some jack off trying to screw anyone). He had all of this done at a shop (he doesn't have any flow numbers though):
My 400 is bored .060 and has dished pistons giving it a 8.5:1 cr. I run a Street dominator intake, crane gold roller rockers, pete jackson gear drive, holley 750 cfm carb (vac sec.) and a hei distributor. If I got these heads I would buy a cam that would suit them best.
My question is, how much power will these make? Are they going to be comparable to what stock iron eagles could do? I like the price. I'm in college and would prefer to not spend 800 bucks on heads.
----------
I'm sorry. I forgot to add. I run hooker shorty headers, magnaflow catback, holley red fuel pump, no emissions. I might be getting a MSD 6AL from my uncle soon too. I think that's about it. If you need anything else let me know. Thanks in advance!

"I have for sale a pair of totally rebuilt small block chevy cylinder heads. These are 601 castings (14022601) castings that have had the works! 2.02 and 1.60 stainless steel valves, double valve springs (100# on seat - 310# @ maximum lift. ARP 3/8 screw-in studs, and raised guid plates. These are set-up for any hydraulic cam that you wish to run (you must use 8.1 inch push rods)! The heads were cleaned to bare metal, crack checked, milled .005, cut for 1.437 valve springs and .500 positive valve seals. Chambers opened for larger valves in a way which promotes a high swirl intake charge! Valve bowls were bleded, and intake and exhaust ports were port matched (intakes to 1205 & exhaust to 2114 felpro gaskets). They were also given a seven angle valve job!!! The combustion chambers measure 66cc's... I need these heads out of my garage ASAP as I have no use for them any more!!! COME AND GET EM! $250"

It really depends upon the cam and intake chosen, but no reason they shouldn't support 400+ hp.

Re: 601 heads
You'd say this is probably a good bang for the buck?
601's have the potential to flow enough for a 400?

Re: 601 heads
If they're well ported, they should support a mild 400. Ie, 400HP, but I wouldn't say a whole lot past that. If you really want to know, you can have them flow bench tested.
What pistons do you have? You said 8.5:1, but with what head eh?? So what's the dish size on the pistons, and how far down in the hole are they?
For $250, assembled, i'd say that's a good deal.

What kind of cam would you guys recommend? I suppose it's hard to tell without the flow numbers?

Well no, many people pick a cam without flow numbers.
What is the dish on the pistons, so that we can calc the actual CR?
Then, what are you going to be doing with the car? Pure street? Hot street? Race? etc?

I don't know the dish on the pistons. I was just told "it has dished pistons to keep the stock compression ratio of 8.5:1. The heads I believe are 76cc chambers? The car goes to the track once a month, and gets driven when it's nice out and on weekend nights. It's not my daily driver. It's also a manual transmission car.

Re: 601 heads
Better go find out what size the dish is on the pistons then eh?
I could back track the math for you, but I doubt it'd be all that accurate. You can measure, get a p/n off the piston, or ask the PO.
I'd go for a fairly big cam, since it's a big motor, non daily, with a stick shift, relatively light car and 3.23 gears. 240 @ .050, solid flat tappet. Might as well have some fun eh?

Re: 601 heads
I'm going to buy them for 200 bucks. I'll get them this Friday when I'm home from school. How do you measure the dish of the piston? I'm just going to remove the heads on the 400 and measure the dish. Fill me in. Thanks.

Re: 601 heads
The pistons might be stamped with a number on top, and you can google that number and decode the part number.
Or, go to a vet and buy a syringe with graduations. It'll most likely be in the 10-22cc range, so a syringe that can measure that would work. Then just fill it up and push the liquid into the piston dish until its full. That should be close enough.
