Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Take the accessory belt off and try it again. If the sound goes away, it's one of your accessories.

Sounds a whole bunch like what my 3800 Buick sounded like when the harmonic damper crapped out. But, I'm not sure what type of damper the 3rd gen 2.8's use.

Could be a main bearing, doesn't really sound like a rod bearing, though.

Re: need help

you are talking about the main belt right?
i dont know a lot about cars but im going to try that tomorrow,
one of my friends also told me to take off the valve covers and check the rockers. hopefully one of those two will fix the problem

Re: need help

Take a long handled screwdriver, place the plastic end against your ear, and hold the metal end against any location - when you find the spot with the noise, you'll know it! The screwdriver picks up vibrations and they are magnified 10 fold when you have it against your ear - that will give you a place to start. I did this when I had an accessory making noise - this allowed me to know for sure it was my AIR pump and not my A/C.

Re: need help

Yikes! not good. Since the engine doesn't seem to be running bad - skipping, rough idle etc, I'd eliminate valve train. Sounds like a rod to me. Not too loud when your camera was around topside of the engine, but when you shut the hood with camera in front of car it sure sounded louder and deeper like a rod knock.
You can pull wire or short out cylinders one by one to isolate the cylinder. When you find the cylinder the sound will get a lot lower or virtually go away. Sounds like you'll be into this motor. Any thing funky happen leading up to the noise?

It was more of a constant "knock-knock-knock" like it made the knock with each engine revolution; rather than the "knocka-knocka-knocka" - which is louder for one revolution than the next, for a rod knock.

But, could be a rod bearing. Pretty common with those engines.

Re: need help

Five7Kid above has got a good point, it does kind of have a "baseball card in the spokes" sound to it (I'm dating myself here). Come to think of it, about 4 months ago I had a neighbor bring me her '01 Blazer. She was told the engine was shot - had a rod knock. I pulled out my 30yr old stethascope and found the noise coming from the distributor. The rotor shaft had at least a 1/2" side play in it. So, it wouldn't hurt to pull you dist cap and check for play in the rotor shaft, or invest in an automotive stethascope to pinpoint the source of your noise.
BTW - how many miles on the engine?
