Gas smell checklist

Hi,

After some searches I found a partial list of gas smell items to check for (gas filler neck, gas tank, air inlet value, canister). I have the smell inside the cabin and when I step outside of the car. It seems to happen just after filling up the car but I can't be sure of it.

Is there a check list somewhere I can follow to check throughout the car? Since it is a 20 year old carbed car I imagine it could also be fuel lines or even the carb but I'd like some guidance on the most likely causes of the smell.

Thanks!

The most likely cause is the carb leaking. Almost everything else (except the canister) will result in gas on the ground. Best way to troubleshoot (eliminate) the carb is to run the car to operating temp then park it and remove the air cleaner. Evidence of a leak will quickly evaporate so watch it for 10 minutes. Ranked by popularity the leaks are 1: leaking lead plugs in the bottom of the jet wells, evidenced by long cranking time after sitting hot and engine starts out of a flood. 2: fuel filter fitting at carb or line connection. 3: top bowl gasket on the carb leaking gas down to intake. Check these first and if there is no gas on the ground check the canister and hoses. Especially the vent hose from the tank to canister.
