If you ave only one glowing exhaust tube, the intake port on taht cylinder is lean ( vacuum leak)

Set the timing with a advance timing light and vac adv disconnected to 32-36deg BTDC at max rpm advance. Vacuum advance should add an additional 12-15deg at part throttle high speed cruise. Total combined mechnical+vac advacne should not exceed 51deg.

The gasket between the intake manifold and cylinder head.
Or what ever you have connected to the vacuum port that is on top if the #8 intake runner is leaking.
(transmission vacuum modulator or attaching line)

it only started glowing when i put on a quadrajet 800 cfm carb. would that be part of the glowing problem too? the intake is tight and dont hear or feel any leaking around it. i dont see any lines runnin to the cylinder 8... im lost

There should be a vaccume port right behind the carb in the #8 intake runner. Check all the vaccume lines that connect to that port.

If you could see or hear the manifold vacuum leak you would not be typing here . You'd be out changing the gasket. Check the carb base gasket. the intake manifold could still be leaking from the bottom. Use some propane down the carb while its running. Does the exhaust pipe stop glowing when you add the extra fuel?

Re: what shoulod i set my timing to?

i had a quadrajet 800 cfm on there. i wrote here thinking it might be an issue for the problem... extra gas it floods itself out. and the pipe only gloew red when i put this carb on. could that be an issue? i was thinking maybe the gasket on top of my carb spacer could of been leaking, but not sure
