What do you guys recommend 7 or 8mm? What brands do you guys prefer?

 

I like the Canadian tire shelf stuff. I think it's Bosch, 7mm? They're cheap (especially when on sale) and carry a lifetime guarantee. I keep burning them on headers, I keep getting new sets.

 

8mm is stock.

I prefer Taylor Spiro-Pro ones such as these. They come in other colors too; red, blue, yellow, even lime green and hot pink.

We use the Borg Warner Select part number CH8833. Its made for an 87-95 Chevy truck. They're all 8mm wires, and they have 90 degree boots for use with headers. The resistance is some of lowest I've seen, and the price is half that of "performance" wires that have twice the resistance.

I've never had problems with holley wires.
Right now i'm trying Megafire (I think).

You don't really need to go to an 8mm wire unless you're running some kind of powerful aftermarket ignition system.

Ah man if you gonna give him that advice you might as well tell him to run solid cores wires and a mag.

 

Yea, you might want to back up your advice with some logic eh? It's more motivating if there's some reasoning behind it.

Hey Kevin, that's good to know about the BW ones. As usual with the high performance world, sometimes the stock stuff is as good, or better, and half the price! I'm going to keep this in mind.

 

I switched to 8mm MSD wires when I got a new distributer cap, coil and rotor. I haven't noticed any difference but the red wires once you run them through a loom look sweet.

 

Just dont touch the distributor when the engine is running with those MSD wires. You'll get a nasty shock. That only happens with those wires.

 

I've never been zapped with my MSD wires. I also run an MSD distributor and an MSD HVC II coil which puts out 2 amps of power. Typical stock coil puts out around an amp. If I ever get zapped, it would be enough to knock my back on my butt.

 

Check for splits in your wires.

 

My car is pretty stock at the moment so I guess the 7mm will do. However the 8mm are the same price as the 7mm... The 8mm are for the older models, but I don't think it makes much difference.

 

Size isn't the only factor. A low resistance wire means more spark energy can reach the plug. In a typical street engine, any wire set will do. Because I run alcohol, I want as much spark energy to the plugs to keep them lit. All the fuel that gets dumped into the engine can extinguish the plug.

You can have a low resistance 7mm wire that are better than high resistance 8mm wires. Accell also makes a 8.8mm wires and some very high end wires are 9mm. Some of the wire looms can't hold the large diameter wires.

 

LOL , I have the same set up and I thought wow I never been lifted by an ignition system like this before. Playing under the hood and I shorted something out I forget now it happened so quick and the shock was so much I forgot what I did .

 

On a brand new set? This is on three different sets of MSD wires on three different cars. I've stayed away from them since and just went with the Borg Warner wires I mentioned. And it was only at the distributor. Touching the wires anywhere else was no problems.

 

I never run msd before but this time I went with msd everything and I have had my hands all over the wires when setting up the timing and I never got hit with a shock ounce. I was so impresed because with my accel wires I was afraid LOL.
