Oil Filter adapter was loose.

Well I did my annual oil change tonight on my IROC. Actually last year I didnt get to it, since the miles werent up there, and my tranny started to go last sept, so I parked it for the winter. (Tranny fixed now). Anyways when I did my oil service, I noticed that adapter that has the 2 oil cooler lines coming off it was loose. I reached up to clean the filter surface, and the adapter was loose enough to be able to rock back and forth a little. Then I grabbed the center nut/fitting, and was able to turn it by hand. Of course it was oily around the adapter, but not bad enough to drip, and I had no puddles in the garage. Of course I tightened up the center nut, and finished my oil change.

So anyone seen this happen before? Common problem? What could have happened, just a messy oil leak, or major oil failure?

not sure if it relates, but I work at a Jiffy Lube and we see a lot of the oil filter spindles loose, and they are always hand loose.

Re: Oil Filter adapter was loose.

Sure it relates. Just that my filter itself was tight, I had to use a filter wrench to take it off. I wonder how the spindle nut gets loose? Maybe it loosens up as undo the filter? Maybe I tighten filter too much, and the center nut loosens up as I undo the filter?
