You may have a bunch of sludge in your motor.

Re: oil pump gone??

The top end doesn't usually get a huge amount of oil. With the engine running and the valve cover off, some oil may get sprayed off the rockers but not always.

Pick an area that looks dry and pull a rocker off. Pull out the pushrod and see if you can blow through it or force compressed air through it.

The hydraulic lifters need a good oil supply but the rockers and the rest of the valve train only needs oil for cooling so they don't need a huge supply. They normally get oil through a splash method with some oil being forced up the pushrods.

I run solid roller lifters. I have restricters in my block to reduce the amount of oil that reaches the top end of the engine.

Re: oil pump gone??

the engine is clean, the engine is knocking so it got to be the oil pump.last weekend i replace the rod bearings i pack the bearings with grease put everything back together.crank it up,no knock at all but after 10 mins running time probably after the grease burn off.the knock came back slowly

so this weekend im going to replace the oil pump should have done it last weekend but i thought it was good since the gauge was reading nice psi.

Re: oil pump gone??

Did you measure the clearance when you replaced the rod bearings?

Re: oil pump gone??

no i didnt, i know i should have but all the journals look fine, well the last rod bearing did spun the only one,if it is worn down can i put an oversize bearing to fill the gap.

but if it worn down wouldn't it have knock when i first fired it up?

Re: oil pump gone??

If you had a bearing spun in the rod, then the rod needs to be resized or replaced, and the crank journal is trashed and needs to be ground undersize, or the crank replaced. All you did was waste your time and a set of bearings.

Re: oil pump gone??

Yes, you should be able to build some oil pressure during cranking. It doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your oil pump.

Re: oil pump gone??

well the heads are dry,and when i took the rod caps off they was almost dry to.

really i think my gauge is just mess up,60lb when running when it hot it goes to 10 then give a lil gas it stays at 60 again idk.im going to get a mechanical to be sure.

but i think im going to save another 150 to get the engine overhauled.i have enough to get the rebuild kit already.but dont have enough to get the crank, might have to sell my RF amp lol.damn this is a lot of pressure for a 17 year old...

Re: oil pump gone??

When in doubt, install a mechanical gauge and recheck pressure. If you have 60 psi then there isn't anything wrong with the pump.

From the sounds of it, the engine is trash. It's cheaper to install a replacement engine than it is to fix that one if a rod bearing has already spun. A spun rod bearing will have heated up the rod end and distorted it. The rod needs to be resized or replaced. Parts are cheap but the engine needs to come apart to have proper machine work done to it. All that time and labor will be more than a replacement engine. If you spun a rod bearing, there will be metal throughout the engine and oil galleries are probably plugged. The metal from the bearing will also contaminate all the other bearings in the engine.

crankshaft kit
oil pump/screen
freeze plugs
rear main seal
intake gasket
head gasket
timing chain kit

So what about the engines balance?
Are you gonna personally press your old pistons off the bad rods and onto the other rods?

Re: oil pump gone??

The reciprocating parts in an engine have their weights matched and the crank counterweights altered so that the thing doesn't shake itself to pieces. Swapping a stock rod for a stock rod might be ok.

Re: oil pump gone??

ok the engine is out,and the crank is gone lol figures, but would the connecting rod be good still if the bearing just spun on the crank like it did? it looks normal lol
