BIG TIME TPI ISSUE...

ok...i was supposed to run down the charleston sc but the night before the car started acting stupid...i was getting onto the road and got to about 4000 rpms and the car just died.....so i coated a lil bit, put the car in neutral and retarted it and she fired right up...i started down the road some more and drove ok then did the same thing...the 2nd time the car's tach slowly fell n rpm and then idled between 200-600 rpms...i touched the gas and she died completely......i stopped...turned the car all the way off and let sit for a few minutes...started it back up and it fired up....it let it idle and she sat right at 1000 rpms like usual and then i drove off...i babied it and got it home....the other day while i was driving it nicely it did the same exact thing...idled low and died...after i shut it off and let sit for a minute of so it would not even fire.....the next morning it fired up on the first try....wtf is the deal with this thing....i need a running car and my only other option if i can't figure this is to yank the tpi off for a carb

i checked fuel pressure...it has it....it has spark...new plugs....new wires...new fuel filter

could this be a tps issue or an iat issue?.....maybe a fuel pump relay dying??...please...need help asap!!

the car is a 91 tpi 5 spd car

It has fuel pressure....but how much fuel pressure? You need a MINIMUM of 41-47 PSI. Any less and you will experience starvation.....which kind of sounds like what your having. You need to check how much fuel pressure you have, not just whether you have it or not.

Re: BIG TIME TPI ISSUE...

Exactly my point, you have fuel pressure....but do you have 41-47 PSI. You need to verify this. The car will run on less (which will give you fuel at the schrader valve) but you will have no performance. If the pressure is low you will not have the burst of fuel needed at the injectors when you crack the throttle open. Lots of air rushing in but no fuel to go with it. High RPM....forget it. It will idle but as soon as you crack it....no fuel burst. Check this before anything else.

Re: BIG TIME TPI ISSUE...

Usually a bad pump but you could also have lost the diaphram in the regulator. Pull the vacuum line off of the FP regulator and look for fuel. Also open the TB blades and look for lots of fuel in the plenum. If they are dry you prolly have a bad pump. DO NOT guess and change the pump w/o checking the fuel pressure first. That is ALOT of work for nothing if its something else.

Re: BIG TIME TPI ISSUE...

I would just go to a parts store with a loan a tool program. Borrow their FB gauge (make sure it has the right adapter for your shrader valve) and check the FP. VERY IMPORTANT...Check the FP with the vacuum line to the regulator unplugged. Good luck.
