NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

i just put a rebuilt 305 in my 1991 z28 TPI.....im having abit of a problem....

everything was reconnected correctly as far as the harness and intake go....

PROBEM: i have coolant comming out of my throttle body and out of my headers; obviously there is coolant getting fed into my air intake system some how....

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHERE TO START DIAGNOSING????

????: could it be possible that the heads arent torqued on?, because the intake is put on absolutely perfect....i bought the motor from another person so maybe the heads werent torqued on (i know its dumb i should have checked, but obviously its too late for that...)

One of my buddies (VERTIGO Z28) said it may be the heads, he said that once the water pump caught up and started to pressure-ize the system it would start flowing coolant into the intake if the heads werent torqued on....????

I really need help on this, everything else worked out perfectly, it ran, we got it timed and just all the sudden it started flowing out of the TB and the headers....

THANKS A LOT GUYS...PM OR POST REPLY RSVP

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

how much coolant are we talking about? couple ounces? a gallon? if it is a very little bit i would say check the tourqe on the heads if it is in the gallons the whole engine needs to come out and be torn down

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

i wouldnt say too much...but any at all is too much.....im just trying to figure out where to start....

heads may be warped, intake may be on wrong, heads may not be torqued??? i dunno....im just trying to figure out what i can check/test and illiminate before i go tearing down anything......
i appreciate the quick response though... can u think of anything i can start checking without having to dismantle the whole thing right away???cuz who knows it could be something very ridiculously stupid that i looked over....

thanks again, brandon

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

this is a real unfortunate situation here and I don't know if its at all possible, but is there anyway that the intake is cracked or a coolant hose is routed to a wrong spot on the intake? but then it doesn't seem like it would be coming out the headers?!? just a few suggestions

Hope you get it worked out man, I know how frustrating engine swap stuff can be, good luck

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

yes great input kdx real helpful...

i am betting that if it is enough coolant for you to notice the engine needs to come back out and be torn down... as you started seeing coolant once the system was pressurized... then shut the car off so the pressure dosnt just dissappear, that water is sitting somewhere either in your oil by now or ontop of an intake valve which can lead to all kinds of very bad things...
but i am betting that as you take it apart your will be able to tell exactly where it is coming from

but to start i would look at the TPI first before anything else

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

the fact that it has already come out the throttlebody means it is to late for the the engine has to come apart and be cleaned

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

yes i have seen it and if the source of the leak isnt apparent from the outside then you will need to tear the engine down... now way around that especially if you have done the coolant bypass and made sure there was no coolant left in the TB then the only way it is getting into the TB is from the engine which means it is in the oil by now and will ruin the engine if you dont do anything about it

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

SOOOO.......i found the problem......

we ripped off the heads: we thought it was a head problem.....well we were right: someone dropped a bolt into my intake.....it got sucked into #4, dinged up the piston, and "cast" itself into my head: completely destroying the passenger side water jacket!!!!

easy fix.....but its been driving me crazy: i am a lucky SOB though....: none of the cylinders or scored!!

Re: NEW MOTOR SWAP:PROBLEMS! HELP!

Are you sure #4 piston isn't messed up? It takes a hell of alot of force to stuff a bolt into a head casting. Post a pic of the piston if you haven't already gone nack together with it.
