A direct mechanical coupling between engine and driving wheels gained from a manual gearbox will certainly feel more positive than a fluid coupling as seen on an automatic transmission. This will give the illusion of more power, much like (if you ever tried this) installing a switch to lock-up the torque converter on the 700R4. You will have less drivetrain power loss with a manual box, so technically your RWHP will be slightly higher too.

EDIT : I just thought...I've never experienced the T56 before, but I would imagine it's a 5-speed which, compared with the 4-speed auto would probably have closer ratio gears, but I may be wrong about that.

Re: more power?

The controll over rpm and more gear options helps alot. Almost like having a stall convertor and a better rear axle gear, with better control.

Re: more power?

I vote for the gear ratios.
Even more noticeable if the 700 was getting tired.
