Noob to engine combos

Ok, I'm in the process of building a streetable 1988 Firebird with a strong running engine (this is my first project of this size). I have chosen a SBC 5.7L as my block. I've been looking around and the GM Performance Parts Bow Tie Vortec heads are appealing to me quite a bit. The cast iron small port version features a 175cc intake runner volume and a 65cc combustion chamber. I was wondering if there is anyone here that has used these heads (or any other vortec heads) with good results. My goal is 350-385HP. I plan to use a single plane aluminium bow tie intake manifold (or equivalant) with either a 750cfm Q-jet or 750cfm Holley double pumper. I have not purchased any parts for this yet, but I do want to put together a strong running, reliable engine. In addition, I realize the valve train plays a large role in power output, however I haven't quite settled on the specs yet. So, my main question, could this platform meet my needs?

Thanks,
~Steve

Re: Noob to engine combos

Yes it will but I would go with a dual plane hi rise intake manifold. The dual plane will support way over 400hp with more average torque (better low/midrange power) in the rpm range you'll be using. A single plane is better on an engine that spends most of its time above 5000rpm with a large long duration racing cam etc where low end power is not such a factor. Combine the dual plane manifod with a 750cfm carb. A hydraulic lifter camshaft with a .050" duration of 218° to 240° will work very well. with the larger duration needing and high stall torque converter and more rear gear and compression ratio than the milder duration cam, but making more top end power.

If your stuck on useing a Single plane manifold like the Edelbrock Super vic (vortec) then match the camshaft etc to work with it. A hyd or solid lifter cam with 240° to 255° @.050" 108LSA and 10:1+ compression. This engine will want rpm with a minimum of a "3500+ stall converter and 4.10+ gearing.
You're going to make way more than 385hp. More like 460+hp Needs long tube headers and a big freeflowing exhaust or open headers.
