i've got a 91 z28 with the 350 tpi, car runs great except when u come to stop light or put it in any gear the car shuts down it won't idle in gear, any ideas?

 

what does the oil pressure gauge read when you do this? your sensor could be bad. it is linked to your fuel pump.

 

I hate to be the guy who says this but: There are many threads in this forum that address the problem you describe.
Use search terms like 'stalls', 'won't idle', 'dies at idle', 'IAC', 'TPS', ect. You'll see what I mean.

when i first start the car up its at the max on the gauage then drops down alittle after running

OK. Fair enough. I guess we'll need a little more info then. How long has it been happening, did you change/add anything, buy fuel at an unknown gas station? Weather conditions in your locale? Check engine light? Feel free to add any of your observations.

its been doing it for awhile.....previous owner told me, he didnt daily drive it and hadnt gotten around to fixing it he thought it could have been the tps senoser so i replaced that no luck, only 93 as far as gas, i live in fl so its hot, no check engine light

its auto, its got the 5.7 not the first owner no lights

 

for starters pull the lamp for the check engine light, see if there is one even there. people like to remove them to hide certain problems when selling their cars. the TPS would have given you a check engine code. when you replaced the TPS did you disconnect your battery to reset your computer?

 

The 'Check Engine' light will come on with the key on and engine off. If it doesn't light, THEN pull the instrument cluster out and check the bulb.

 

good point forgot about the quick test on startup.

 

I'll bet my internet dollar that you'll find that your IAC and/or TB is carboned up and that a good cleaning will make it right.

 

My bet would be vacuum lines, have u checked for any leaks and if they are all properly connected? Also I've read that it could be an issue with the torque converter locking up to early(if anyone has any more info on that?)

 

Checking for vacuum leaks is an excellent suggestion!
The torque converter staying locked would produce a jerking/bucking similar to stopping a manual trans car without pushing in the clutch. I have to assume the torque converter isn't locked.

My internet money is still on the IAC (with a side bet on vacuum leaks)!

how do i go about checking the IAC?

 

the IAC is easy to test.start the car and you can turn on the a/c,or just turn the wheel a little in either direction and it should raise rpms some if not the IAC is probily junk.

 

i'm gonna get dressed and go test that one

 

u can also pull the IAC and see how much carbon build up it has,and if it is exstended all the way or not.makes u want to go when things dont run right uh.

 

any luck with the IAC yet?
