do I have a revv limiter?

I finally finished some work I needed to do to my car (hasn't been driven for 10 years) - and I wanted to take her out and open her up. First, I have got to say that this is the fastest v6 ever. I was actually a little scared. Second - when I floor it the tach goes all the way to the redline before shifting. Do all camaro's do this?

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

I had a 91 Camaro with the 3.1 V6 and I recall it shifted just shy of redline if I left it in drive, so I would say that's about normal.

I'm sure there's a rev limiter in the chip programming somewhere (actually, a fuel cutoff) but I never revved it high enough to find it. It was clearly well above the point that I would ever try to rev a stock engine.

There is also a fuel cutoff at a certain MPH. In my 91 it was around 120 MPH, give or take. The top speed fuel cutoff was designed so as not to allow you to exceed the speed rating on whatever tires came originally on your car from the factory. It took a long downhill run for me to find the top end on my 91 V6, though. Around a buck-twenty it was like the motor shut off. Just about the time my brain began to think "what the f---?" the speed had dropped enough to let it fire up the injectors again and away it went once more, doing kamikaze assaults on the fuel cutoff over and over again.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

not positive on the rev limiter for rpm through gears to have a fuel cut off, i know on my 89 lo3 5 speed 305 it will crank until the valves float. and yes there is a fuel cut off after a certain mph its called the vss or variable speed sensor i beleive. theres a wire that goes to the ecm on the harness that you can tap into and either disable it compeletly or runa switch to shut the sensor on and off..i have a switch.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

The rev limiters in the Eproms are not utilized in any of the 3rd Gens. However, except the L98s and LB9 cars that had Z-rated tires when they came from the factory; they all had speed limiters.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

Thanks guys - I wasn't sure if the car had been moded before I got it. I've had alot of cars and none of them have waited that long to shift. I never intend to go over 80 mph in this car. I really like it - thanks for the info - Nate

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

It may have issues. Maybe the TV cable may need adjustment or you have some internal tranny problems, especially if it has been sitting for a number of years. Have you checked the fluid? Better yet, change the fluid to start.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

Yes I have changed to fluid and filter. And thanks to this forum I had the courage to install my own b&m shift sleeve - but I don't think that has anything to do with rpm's. I don't mind it burying the RPM's as long as it can handle it.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

I would make sure your TV cable is properly adjusted (as well as your tranny) before undertaking any modifications. You should look at installing the Trans-Go Shift pack available from Pro-Built Transmission. It sounds like your shifts are "vague & weak". The Trans-Go Shift pack will help firm it up.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

No, it's very easy and takes only a few minutes. Any time you have to do any work involving removal of the Throttle Body, you must re-adjust the TV cable. Go to this link for instructions on how to do it.

https://www.thirdgen.org/detent

And if you are uncertain whether you have done it correctly, just repeat the instructions.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

Go here -> http://www.700r4l60e.com/

This is Pro-Bilt Automatics' web page

Dana is a great guy. He posts on the Tranny Board from time to time.

Definitely give him a call and discuss your tranny issues with him as well as "upgrades" for the 700R4 that he recommends. However, some are designed to be installed when you are tearing the tranny apart. Tell him you heard about him on TGO.

I will be buying my next transmission from him.

Re: do I have a revv limiter?

I figured the v8's would be faster - but I would put the 3.1 on par with the DOHC 24v v6 that comes with the probe gt's - and that's really saying something.
