PLEASE HELP ME!!

I've got a 92 camaro rs, 3.1 v6 with the 5spd trans.... here is the problem... i was driving down the high way and my car started cutting in and out like crazy... i pulled over and it died, got it to start again, took off and then it would cut out and barely move and die.... did this a few times, the last time it wouldnt even turn over, not a click nothing and i noticed the security light was on.... i let it sit for about an hour and it started back up, ran for about 15 minutes normal and then acted up again... but the security light only came on twice so far and when it does it will not crank at all or even make a click... whats the deal??? whats wrong with my car??? i just installed a aftermarket cd player is this why???

Could be a few things...first... Big time wiring prob... grounding out ect... sounds like a camshaft sensor or tps if you car is equip with such POS sensors just from personal expericne hopefully it'll help you out a little

well it was just random my has been running good... it idles kinda funny (choppy like it has a cam but i doubt anyone would put a big cam in a v6) and it runs rich it smells like but it ran good and strong, till one day on the highway started cutting out like someone kept cutting off the power to the coil or something in and out in and out and then i would pull over and few seconds later die.... then try to start again.... crank a lot then finaly start like it was flooding out and smoke would come out the tailpipe and smell like gas, sometimes it would come through the vents of the car like it back fired or something.... then it wouldnt start back up and my security light was on... wouldnt click or anything never had any of these problems then left, came back started right up drove fine for about 15 minutes and then did the same thing again... i just dont understand aside from the "Big cam" like idle and the running rich it ran darn good untill this other stuff happend.. if i leave alone for while then re-start it drives fine for a bit then messes up again and cuts in and out very badly...

could it be the VATS? someone said since the secuirty light came on and it wouldnt even click that the key or switch may be bad since it has that "chip" but it doesnt always stay on, but when it does come on it wont click or nothing, leave alone and it will start.. this just happend too... but it wouldnt cause my car to cut out like it does while driving would it???

AND my windows dont work, roll down or up... but it was like this when i bought it, dont have anything to do with it i wouldnt think? i just put in a new stereo also, old one didnt work the clock would but radio wouldnt come on... i installed aftermarket and still didnt work, clock would but wouldnt play or anything... so i plugged everything in with the aftermarket harness except the power wires i hooked to the fuse block

also acts like my car is flooding out.... and everytime i turn key i hear fuel pump, then it stops, turn key again and it goes back on then stops

also, i can start it up and let it idle and it idles (but choppy like a big cam and smells like gas) and then i go and try to give gas and cuts out like sucking in a lot of air then if u keep doing it it will just die.... i have a whole in my exhaust by the manifold and it makes gassy smoke come out when it dies like it back fired or somethin but not loud.... i cant drive it all it does is shutter really bad and barely moves and when it gets bad it wont move and wont idle and floods out let sit for about 20 minutes and its okay again for a litle longer than all over again!! whats the deal can ANYONE help???

a hole in the exhast manifold? intake??? that hole may be why the motor's running rough lost of compression, fuel leaking out, improper vacum ect ect also withthe wireing..... either bite it in the butt and try to fix it.. or rip it all out and get a new wiring harness... the wiring harness might be a little bit of money but save you a lot of head ache NOW and LATER

ONLY DOES THIS WHEN ITS HOT.... I NOTICE IN THE MORNINGS ITS FINE UNTILL TEMP GETS WARMED UP THEN ALL THIS HAPPENDS IT SHUTTERS, AND SPITS AND ACTS LIKE SOMEONE IS INSIDE FLIPPING A SWITCH TO THE COIL ..... COULD IT BE MY COIL???

There are several things that repond to heat.


The most common are the coil and the ignition module. Both are temperature sensitive and show the first symptoms at high temperature.


Your car also enters closed loop idle at these temperatures.

I don't think the VATS would cause the car to cut out. It will cause the no-start comndition. I recommend that you do the VATS bypass to be on the safe side.


Also, when it died... Did the tach go to zero before the motor had even stopped turning (like a loss of tach signal)

that is a classic ignition module symptom.

my tach is off in the first place it reads high... i have no cat or muffler could that be why??? its a standard... and when it starts doing this crap my tach starts going everywhere!! so im guessing ignition module? how do i replace that?? expensive?

Actually, ignition modules aren't all that expensive and easy to change. You need to remove the distributor cap. The module is a 2 plug sensor mounted under the cap. IT is held on by 2 5 MM fasteners. Remember to add the grease to the bottom when installing a new module or it will not last long.

is that what it sounds like is bad?? should i replace the module and the coil both??? i mean my tach reads high (do not know why, would this be the reason or because i have no cat and no muffler??) just striaght pipe to the back... it drives fine and starts right up when cold, when it gets around the 220 mark or so is when trouble begins and it jerks and acts like someone is in the car with a kill switch flipping it on and off and barely wants to go and sometimes dies... when it dies it sometimes will start for like 2 seconds then die again and sometimes floods out the motor... when this stuff starts happening my tach jumps off the wall and goes everywhere... pretty much an up and down really fast kinda thing.... you think if i replace my ignition module and my coil it will be fixed? i replaced fuel filter today and still same thing...

at the shop getting a new distributor with new pickup coil, ignition module and everything already installed i didnt know if it was ignition module or pickup coil he suggested i get a new dist. so $300 later its at the shop being put in right now... thats parts and labor with warrenty i guess its not tooo bad

Ya, the 2.8 have a very badly placed coil. I fried one before I relocated it to a better spot.

i have the 3.1..... and it worked better now it wont start im not getting any spark the guys who put in the reman. distributor told me it was my coil i replaced coil and still no spark.... what could be the deal? did they screw me over???

2.8 and 3.1 are the same block.

Check for power to the coil at the big pink wire. Check all the connections that they made, anything that could be loose. If all else fails take them up on that warantee.

well it started fine and drove off when i left, got to gas station killed it then it wouldnt restart he checked for spark (came to gas station) and said coil not putting spark so i replaced it and still doing same thing?? could it be they ghave me a faulty distibutor with a bad module or something???
