compression check

i need some advice on a compression check i just rebuilt the 350 in my 89 gta and i have no compression on the gauge i ripped the timing cover off and redid the timing chain and valve lash and still nothing i have rebuilt heads with all new valves and etc. and new head gaskets when i turn the motor over by hand i can feel that there is compression and that its most likely not the rings any advice on what it could be or any things to also check?
also when i did the check i did not open the throttle or pull all the plugs does this matter? and if i turn it over by hand will it show compression on the gauge or do i need to turn it over with the starter?

thanks in advance

Re: compression check

No compression as in zero?
Check the compression tester itself. Even with the throttle closed and plugs in, still should have a fair bit (likely 120ish PSI) during cranking.

Re: compression check

well i hope your compression gauge is bad ! or you got something seriously out of wack. test should be done with engine warm plugs out, throttle open and with starter, not by hand. if your gauge is good ? pull rockers off one cylinder so valves wont open and check it, if no compression you got problems.

make sure compression tester is good.....
