canister

I was looking at vacuum diagrams earlier that show the purge canister in the front corner of the engine bay of the 305 models, and i noticed that there is not currently one in my car. All of the egr stuff in my car was taken out before i bought it, and i was just wondering if this canister is a necessary piece, or will my car run fine without it?

It provides venting of the fuel tank, a rather important function.

Re: canister

ok that seems pretty important... all if the lines that originally went to the canister are still in place, just not the canister. Could this be a bad thing to leave like this, or should i go find a canister for it?

You lose a big chunk of gas mileage without it

Re: canister

um.. ya kinda dangerous. gas is not bad but gas vapor. boooom. If you smell it then you really need it. It's kinda like having a really small gas cap off your tank. find one in the junk yard or something.

Re: canister

just went and picked one up, and it looks like it bolted right up, wasn't missing any hoses or anything under the hood.

Re: canister

You made sure to hook up the wiring for the purge solenoid, correct?

Re: canister

it looks like all of the ports on the whole part are plugged into where they need to be. would the canister still work if i turned it upside down and put it under the panel it is bolted up stock at? i kind of want to keep my engine less cluttered and it looked 10x better without it. however, i don't know much about fuel systems and this part so i want to keep everythign working right...

I've wondered about cutting a hole in that panel and mounting the canister down flush. That's the way I've seen some factory canisters mounted (my fullsize '84 van, for instance). You should have a shield between it and the tire to keep the filter a little cleaner.

I don't know that there would be a problem mounting it upside down, but I don't think that would be my first choice.

Re: canister

Local club member moved his canister under where it sits now (inside the fender) and extended the wires/hoses to reach

I test fitted it down there and it has barely enough room

I will be moving it there eventually and Ill post the progress

Re: canister

the only problem i had with trying to get mine to fit under there earlier, is that the sphere thing is directly under it. if i try i may be able to get them to fit side by side, but i didnt think about that at the time
