High pitched Squeling

ok, heres the story...

i was sitting in my car after work with the heat on as i finished reading a magazine (maybe sat there with only heat on for about 20 min). So i go in reverse to pull out of parking spot, put it in gear and i hit the "go" pedal and all of a sudden i hear a really high pitched squeling. I stopped right away to make sure i had it all teh way in gear. it was a dark area and the light from under shift plate was dull so i couldnt tell. I put it back in park, then turned off car. Started it back up, put it in drive and slowly accelerated again. no squelling that time. Then i squel the tires taking off from a red light (i like to see how fast i can react) and it squels for about half a second then goes back to normal.

so any ideas? I opened the hood when i got home and listended to the motor run and there was also a clicking sound? does that mean anything?

Note: i plan on autocrossing it on Sunday the 14th... would that be a bad idea?

Squeal and an odd clicking? Might not be a good idea to autocross until you figure out the problems. Clicking could be the injectors. See if that's the case. If the clicking isn't coming from the injectors, then it could be a valve issue.

The belt could be old or slipping causing the squeal. Can't hurt to get a new belt and make sure it's nice and tight.

It has been clicking since i got the car (about a month or two ago), but the squelling is new. If it was the belt wouldnt it squel constintly instead of twice. I just drove it to school and back and drove to pick up my brother from school and didnt squel at all. A friend of mine thought it might be the power steering pump but you would think that would also squel continously.

I really want to aurtocross on sunday but i dont want to risk doing major damage to my car...

Just an thought. Compressor going bad? Although you didn't state if your 'ROC has air or not.

Re: High pitched Squeling

i'm guessing the alternator is squealing. That would explain why it was doing it after you idled for a while with the heater on. (battery slightly drained and the heater motor pulling more current)
You need to recreate the problem. It is most likely a belt slipping. Try turning all electrical devices on (radio, heater on full, defrost, headlight) and then taking off fast.

Was it raining?

Re: High pitched Squeling

waterpump maybe ?

mine was making a clicking noise and a squeel when ever i tried to give it gas... the bearing had cracked and my water pump pulley started jumping around... that didnt happen till a few days after the noises started though. might wanna pull the belt and make sure you dont have any play on the pump pulley.

It doesnt mean the alternator is necessarily bad.. It may also mean the belt is loose or getting worn. It would just be an interesting test.
