idle

I'm having issues maintaining a smooth stable idle.
It will fluctuate between 500 to 700 rpm constantly.
My thirdgen is fully mechanical (no ecm, no emissions with a new Edelbrock 1406 carb and headers). I've re-done the timing (@12 on full manifold vacuum). Installed new control module as well as the coil and ignition cables(all Accel). Spark lugs have been gap'd at.050.

What else can I investigate to resolve this problem ??

Thanks

Re: idle

because some companys offer different sized springs that allow the advance to come in earlier or later depending on the spring combo you install... and while the smallest springs usually have all the timing in the earliest they often have a hard time controlling the advance at idle... sorta surges

i asked about the dist because you didnt specify nor did we get any specs on the engine... you know all of the info

Re: idle

Sorry SpitotRs305.... here is what I have, a 1982 Camaro Z28 with an LG4 305 carburated engine and automatic transmission. I've restored the car over the space of 2 years. With respect to the engine, very little mods were done... I've installed hedmann headers, replaced the carburetor with an Edelbrok 1406 (electric choke) carb, replaced the HEI Coil (in cap) with an accel high performance one and replaced the ignition control module(Accel 4 pin). Ignition wires were also replaced with Accel's 8.8 race wires. Sparkplug s used are ACDelco and/or Bosch platinum gap'd at .50. Then I removed all the emissions stuff to clean up the engine bay as well as the Cat which was completely clogged. Installed dual exhaust with magnaflow resonators (left out the cats).
Thanks

Re: idle

no, I thought it was the plugs.... I'm running bosch plugs at the moment. Tried the acdelco plugs without any change.

Re: idle

do u have any problems at full throttle any missing or sputtering? I would check for a vaccum leaks.Check ur fuel pressure to see if it changes.A clogged fuel filter could cause this.Check to see if the choke is partly stuck.

Re: idle

no, no problems at full throttle, no sputtering or misfiring.
I changed my fuel filter (it was not dirty) verified, and the choke is fine. The choke comes off quickly with a blip of the gas...
I will verify the gas pump next. Thanks.

Re: idle

Well guys, I re-gap'd the spark plugs to.040;
replaced the regular aluminum posted distributor cap (I verified and noticed that the terminal contacts were loose and replaced it with an Accel brass posted cap.

Did timing at 8*, set to full (manifold) vacuum and readjusted idle to run at 900 rpm in park and 600 rpm in drive or reverse........ it is now a smooth idle.
Thanks
