timing problem

ok i have a problem with my timing.i just put a new engine in my car and i hooked everything up and i had the car running earlier but everytime i would try to set the timing and get closer to the mark it would start to run rough. then i found out that the wires were not right. so i put the wires in the correct order but now all i am gettin is a pop through the carb and it will not fire. i took the valve cover off and rotated the engine till both valves were closed and the engine was set at tdc. and adjusted the ditributor to that. but still no fire. it wants to pop through the carb but not fire. me and my brother have done everything we possiably know and everything is right but this one has got me stumped. can anyone help?

Re: timing problem

remove the number one sprk plug turn the engine until u hear compressed air come out bump engine until the piston is all the way to the top u can check with a screw driver. then look under the distrib cap and see where the rotor button is setting and make sure ur number one cyc wire is here and make sure then u have the firing order correct. if u have the car wired up right it should start u may need to rotate dis a little to start up the motor
