HI I have a 79 chevy 350 here is what I have done with it. Its my first v8 build. Im planning on putting it in my stripped 1984 camaro with 6 point roll bar, sfc, tubular suspension, 3:73 posi rear 10bolt.
-block had race prep and checked out
-Block bored .060 over..b/c pitting in one cylender
-speed pro hypertonic 9.6 compression pistions
-scat i-beam rods with arp bolts
-Eagle crank 600hp rating
-arp mains 4 bolt
-fully balenced up to 8000 rpm
-summit 510/533 cam 245 duaration-- Idk I can aways change
-alumium votec heads with all manly componets swerl posished valves .580 spings
-full aluminum rolor rockers
-headman full length 1 5/8 3'' colectors going to run 3" purple honies behind
-single plane hi rise intake
-holley 750 IDK Should I go for mechnical or vacume have not ordered yet.
-aluminum water pump
-6 3/4 balencer
-mellings oil pump 70 psi spings 7qt pan
-all msd ignition with 8mm wires and morso show loom wire kit. chapion plugs
- Im running a th350 with shift kit and 3000-3600 stall 10'' converter for now

What do you guys think for a mainly drag car and a friday night screw around car with this engine set up in it?
Let me know.

Re: SB Engine combination?

with all that work i would have put a stroker crank in it since you balanced the whole thing anyways... other than that it looks like a good build. the cam isnt too bad might wanna go with something that has a fast ramp rate but more lift would do you no good... vortecs run out of steam at around .520-.530 on the intake side. you could also stand to run higher compression with that durration... whats the lsa on the cam 109-110?

Definitely a double pumper carb.

Exactly what heads are these? The only aluminum "Vortec" heads the factory made of which I'm aware are the Fast Burns - great heads. There are a dozen different off-shore knock-offs using Vortec intake mount patterns - that's a hit or miss proposition.

Which roller rockers exactly? Proform and the typical eBay knock-offs are a failure waiting to happen. Hard to beat Comp Pro Magnums in this performance range.

Which intake? If Torker II, get something else - That thing isn't even a good boat anchor. Most good single plane intakes require at least a 4000 stall converter. If your cam powerband exceeds what a Performer RPM dual plane can support, you absolutely need more stall (is it 3000 or 3600?).

An 8" damper would be better. But, if your 6-3/4" is SFI rated, it should be okay.

Not a bad start on paper. Just need to tweak the details.

(For the record, it's "hypereutectic". . .)

Re: SB Engine combination?

Who built the engine for you? Shop, friend, yourself?

I'd want to know what part number the pistons were, what size chamber the heads are, the deck height, compression height of pistons, head gasket used, etc.
That way i'd know the REAL compression ratio. I'd say you have a 50/50 chance that 9.6:1 is accurate within .2, and if you prefer to have hard numbers, i'd ask the builder.

Do you have a cowl hood to fit the single plane under?

Re: SB Engine combination?

I was thinking about going to a stroker but it seemed like to many things to chage. I Have been building the engine my self with Pakes Machine shop in Janesville Wi. The rollor rockers are summit brand.. The intake is a ebay single plane they said the rpm is 3000-7600 I figured I can aways change intakes. I have a self made 6in cowl hood... looks like crap but gives clearence. but i got a stock good and im planing on cutting a hold and stick a k&n Through it. I went with the small balencer b/c I have some circle track buddys and there big on less rotaing mass. I'm thinking of going with a fluid one. When they balenced the crank and stuff I had them do it with the balencer and flex plate on to.
And sonix I know what you man about the compression. The deck was claned. and I used felpro gaskets dont know thinkness but they were pritty thick. Have you guys seen the aluminum head gaskets there Thin.
The pistions were 9.6:1 with 64cc heads.. my heads are 64cc aluminum so lower yet.. but Im just looking for high end power.. The machine shop told me 450hp with that cam. and I want to buy a better cam after I race it a few times so I can see if theres a diffence in power.

I also found a new q-jet that is re calabrated by eldebrock and its 800cfm would that be a good carb for this set up or should I go dubble pumper?

The rotating mass difference between a 6-3/4" and 8" damper is insignificant. The damping effectiveness is significant. The less effective damping of a smaller damper can actually cost you power vs. an 8".

Advertised powerbands and real-world performance tend to be widely different. You'll probably need 4000 stall to get the intake into its real powerband. But, it'll probably run okay.

I haven't heard durability reports on the Summit rockers. They're probably made by Crane.
