Re: 601 heads anygood?
yea, they're similar to the 416 heads that are supposed to be on that car. The 601s are usually used on truck 305s in that era, and have the smaller chambers (52 vs 58 cc).
Bust out the die grinder and you're ready to race.

Re: 601 heads anygood?
i know alot of guys making big numbers with the 601's. i'm using the 416's on my hotrod 305...only cause i had them though.
word for the wise: go ahead and put some 1.94 valves in them. you can find them in good shape from used 350 heads all day long in the bone yard...i wished i had when i put these 416's together for my own stuff.

Re: 601 heads anygood?
I had a set on my 350, with 1.94/1.60 valves - with the 230/236 cam, it ran like a raped ape and was very torquey down low too. I really liked those heads.
Re: 601 heads anygood?
601's are supposed to be pretty good heads from what I've read. I pulled a set off my '86 Silverado and plan on porting them sometime.
They have small chambers for compression, an advanced chamber shape (kidney shaped vs the old bathtub shape), and from what I can find, they flow better then most other non-vortec v8 heads.
From what I can find, in stock form they flow around 180-190 intake and 140 exhaust at .500" lift. About the same as the 113 aluminum head numbers.
Fast305 had a post that his mild ported 601s with new valves flowed 224in/157ex.

Re: 601 heads anygood?
Stock form with 1.94 intake valves they flow in the 210-215 range, which is very good for a Gen 1 non-Vortec cylinder head. The chamber design is like a "crude" version of the LT1 double-quench chamber. The tiny little 53cc chambers work well with a dished piston on the big bore engines, like the 350 - and its been proven a couple of times that small chamber and slight dish is the best setup for pump gas and high compression (flat's and medium chambers next, then domes and big chambers being the worst).
I ran around 11.25:1 with 601s on my 350 and it ran really well on 91 octane pump gas with the 230/236 cam I have in there - it pinged with lots of timing, but I brought it down till it stopped pinging and it was still a very useable 10* initial, 35* total by 2800 rpm.
I really liked those heads. They were replaced with 200cc World heads that I haven't put any run time into yet, so we'll see what difference that makes, but the World heads make it feel much less torquey than the 601s did... the OOMPH and the killer throttle response with the 601s was incredible!
