What is wrong with my car?

I just bought a 1984 camaro with a swapped 350 into it. Under normal driving it works perfectly fine but say I floor it from a start it works fine, switches into second, but then it keeps going and won't switch into third until I let off the gas. Another thing I notice is if I'm driving around at a constant speed it seems like its kind of jumpy. It will speed up for a breif second and the slow back down and then speed up and slow down like its not getting enough gas or something. My theory on this is that maybe the fuel pump wasn't changed out when they did the swap. On final thing is if I'm on the highway going say 70 and floor it it will downshift but then it just doesn't have any power and again won't shift until I let off the gas. But if I give it slightly less than 100% throttle it works perfectly fine. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Is it carbed or fuel injected?

700R4? What does the fluid look like? A fluid and filter change, and tv cable reset is where i would start.

It is carbed. I'm pretty sure this is a 700r4 transmission as well.

Re: What is wrong with my car?

Would the transmission also be causing the car to not have alot of power? I understand why my shifts would suck but I would think the power would still be there.

Yea but think about it, the power is there but it is being lost in the transmission before it reaches you rear wheels. If that is the case and your clutches are slipping. Try the fluid and filter change, its not gonna hurt and will get you familiar with the area if you end up pulling it for a rebuild.

What kind of carb? If it's an Edelbrock or Holley, you need a "corrector bracket" to get the proper geometry for the TV cable.

Re: What is wrong with my car?

Good question ... I have no idea what kind of carb it is ... I will have to check it out .... I just came from an 04 mustang gt so this **** is new to me. If I change out the fluid and filter and it turns out I do need a rebuild I can just use the same fluid and filter for the rebuild correct?

Re: What is wrong with my car?

nope, and like five7 said that tv cable controlls a lot, its not just a kick down cable.

The TH700R-4 needs to have the torque converter clutch working (lock up) under cruise conditions. This is often ignored when non-computer systems are swapped in. As already stated, the TV cable must be adjusted correctly, or the transmission won't operate under the proper internal pressures. Either or both of these conditions will burn up clutches within the transmission, necessitating a rebuild.

No shift 2-3 under WOT is a classic symptom of burnt-out 3-4 clutches. Typical when no TCC lock-up provision is made, but can also be pure age/use. About the only symptom you described that doesn't fit this is the no power when down-shifting, but even that might be a secondary symptom of a worn-out tranny. The smart money is on you needing a transmission rebuild.

Fluid and filter should be changed regularly. Re-using them upon rebuild is a penny-wise/pound-foolish act.
