What Engine?

I just picked up two third gen camaros, an 82 z28 with a four speed,305. and an 85 z28 with an auto,305. the 82 is in excellent condition but motor is tired. 85 is more of a parts car/ really clean california, rust free shell.

Carb'ed 350:??
The question is, i am having difficulties figuring what engine to throw in the 82. should i run a carb'ed 350, or an LT1? If i build a carb'ed 350 for it, will i have to bypass any wiring, etc? Will it bolt up to the original four speed?

LT1: ??
As far as LT1, am i going to have to do a lot of modifications to make it work? clutch lines? wiring? etc? what tranny would i run with the LT1?

Cost:??
what is going to be a rough estimate of the difference in cost of swapping a stock LT1 or just putting a 350 with mild cam and decent carb?

Sorry if my question sounds amateur, this is my first camaro and yor help is greatly appreciated.

Re: What Engine?

A gen1 350 (non-LT-X motor) will be a drop-in replacement for your old 350. You can still use the computer controlled carb, distributor and everything else on it. Of course, you can ditch the computer controlled carb and distributor and go with non-computer controlled units (old school) and everything else will still swap over and work.

Definitely going to be cheaper than transplanting any EFI motor into it by a lot.

Ditto the 350 under the computer controlled q-jet. Since you have a 4-speed manual, you could justify an old school carb and distributor IF you go with a double pumper Holley or Demon.

Re: What Engine?

Important question - the four speed in your '82, is reverse left and FORWARD, or left and BACKWARDS? That decides if the tranny is worth keeping, or junkage.

I would run a Comp XE268 cam, Performer RPM intake, and 650 Holley 4777 double pumper. Gears should be in the 3.23-3.42 range minimum.

Re: What Engine?

Left and FORWARD is the good one, that's the Borg Warner Super T-10. A famous muscle car tranny. The other is a "saginaw". Piece of crap.

Re: What Engine?

I went to my buddys house and took a peek at the tranny. its not in the car right now so i could not check the shift pattern but it has borg warner stamped on the side ad i wrote down some numbers that were on the side of the case. numbers were: 3-04-066-906. is there any way i can tell which tranny it is with that info?

Re: What Engine?

?? Are you serious? I know you read my post, you re-quoted me. So...?

It says Borg Warner, so it's the borg warner, not the saginaw. It's your lucky day. That's a keeper, if you don't mind the lack of overdrive.

There are other ways to be sure what it is, ie. the reverse lever is on the tailshaft housing rather than the center case, IIRC - but since it says "BORG WARNER" you can pretty much lay that one to bed.
