I know the Vortecs are popular around here, I'm curious to see just how much power these heads can make. Whats the potential of these things?

Im building a Vortec with 10.5-10.8:1, probably the latter, a Lunati 232/242 .510"/.525" 110 lsa hydraulic roller cam, Prof.Prod. Crosswind/airgap intake, 750 Mighty Demon, Beehive valve springs with Titanium retainers.
Motor will be zero decked and balanced, heads milled, but stock bore and stock stroke...block does NOT need bored.
with 4.10 gears and MT ET Street radials, I hope to run 12.0h's or quicker.

Look for a guy on Nastyz28.com with an unported vortec and BIG solid flat cam. I think he went mid 11's with that setup. (remember how heavy second gens are...)

There's also a handful of members here running non-ported vortecs running quite fast. Two off the top of my head, but only one is willing to share the secrets of his combo.

You are thinking of the Malibu. He went 11.60's at 114mph. 413ci. 11.3:1 or there about. 244/252 .520/.540 xs282 comp cam, Super Victor, and 750 holley.
3.42 gears and a 4000 stall. 3500lbs.

I'm pretty sure I was thinking of a '79 Camarom, or thereabouts. It was a 383 too. And I think the cam was even bigger then that.
I might be mistaken though.

There was some chatter about the guy being one of the design engineers who helped create the vortecs or something like that...

with the proper cam these heads can run very well.

the typical XE274, 3500 stall, 3.73 and 26" tires at 10:1 is usually good for bottom 12s, maybe high 11s.

Unless you've had the guides machined you won't be able to run a cam over .480" lift.

Guides have been machined, screw in studs, everything. My motor runs fine, I'm just curious as to what other peoples setups are running power wise

Cool. Yeah they sure do make good power for being a factory casting eh? I got my set for 200 bucks.

Last summer, I witnessed a 383 do 430 HP & 460 TQ on a dyno with non-ported Vortecs, 0.520 " lift hyd flat tappet, Performer RPM, & a Qjet. That was also with 112 race fuel because the compression was somewhere around 10.6:1.
