383 clearance question

So I have started to assemble my short block and after getting a couple pistons in I noticed a very tight clearance between the bottom of the cylinder and the ARP rod bolts. There is a little raised section on every cylinder where it is pretty close. When I had just the crank in I rotated it and only found one spot that the crank got close to right near the filter stud. I thought I would have to notch the pan rail to clear the counter weights in more than one area but I didn't. Anyway, how much clearance do I need between the rod bolt and the bottom of the cylinders? I have grinded a little bit but I am wary of doing to much right near the machined part of the bores. I have about .040 of clearance right now on the bolts. Is this enough?

Also, I don't have my cam yet but the rods came from eagle clearanced for "up to .600 of lift". Do you usually have to clearance the rods any more or are they clearanced as advertised? I am planning on running a xe274 by the way.

The rods I have are pn SIR5700BBLW

and it is a eagle esp 3.750 crank.

All parts are new and were purchased as a kit.

Re: 383 clearance question

You could take more off without any trouble, but .040" should be ok.

Your rods might clear the cam, but the only way to be sure is to check.

Re: 383 clearance question

A tie-wrap makes a convenient go/no-go gauge.

Re: 383 clearance question

Cool thanks guys. I think I will pull it apart and take a little more off. No sense in getting lazy now. I think I will shoot for .050 to .060.
