AC squeeling

Its about the time of year here where AC would be nice. Mine works minus the squeeling that the compressor started making. Could this be the compressor itself or the clutch. Only happens when the AC is kicked on so I guessing clutch? And is is something that I could replace myself or better for a shop to do? Car is an 89 Camaro with a 2.8 in it. Belt has been replaced and I am pretty sure that it has been converted to the new stuff. Also is the V6 and V8 compressor the same? Didn't know and would be alot easier to find a used compressor that still works if I need a new one.

Re: AC squeeling

Squeal is usually the belt. Make sure it's aligned properly and tighten the crap out of it. You say you have a new belt, you should be able to watch it and see if it's slipping when the clutch is engaged.

Compressor going out will usually make a grinding noise then lock up. Try the belt thing first.

Re: AC squeeling

New belt, its aligned, and the tensioner is good too. Its not quite a grinding sound. It only makes the noise when its on.

Listened to it again, it does have a grinding sound. Kind of a lighter grinding sound like the bearings are going out.

Re: AC squeeling

A bad clutch will chatter. Compressor may be on the way out. You can try a shot of oil or run it til it goes.

Rebuilt compressor runs around $150 or so from AZ or the equivalent. Along with a new filter/drier and charge you can get a way with less than $250. You WILL have to evacuate the system before recharging though. If you're not able, hang the parts and have a shop charge it for you.
