Is this a pretty good cam...?
alright, I've been sorta doing some homework on this,
I have a question about this cam, would this be a pretty decent cam?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp%20Cams/24...242-2/10002/-1
I'm wondering would it take alot of gas? (probly not, but I like to know from people who knows this for years)
would it have a pretty lopey sound?
and it would be going into an engine like this one:
http://www.jegs.com/p/GM+Performance...10002/-1/10763
how much horsepower would I gain from this cam alone?
Well I gotta head to bed, thanks!

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
that cam is a good street cam for a 350. will make decent power and give a tad of lope.
BUT that motor isnt the best.. it has crappy smogger heads with large chambers and LOW compression. The cam in that motor isnt much different from the cam you have in mind, and it only rated at 290hp.
now throw that cam in a ZZ4 or something with decent 9-10 to 1 compression and somewhat decent heads, you'll make a good deal of power and be very usable on the street

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
Yeah, I heard alot of things about that engine, It's been like a hard achivement for me to get a 350 engine. :-\ still 16, still in highschool, and working two jobs, and barely have free time (right now Im on the school computers..)
I havent been doing good on my saving goal, like I had about $500, and its gone because I bought new tires, redid my exhaust, and had to buy some spark plug wires new Ypipe, etc.
would this be a good engine?
http://www.jegs.com/p/GM+Performance...10002/-1/10763
and I do have a feeling that if I put that cam in that engine, Im sure it will down power it, give it less power, because the cam they have in it is a 1965-67 Corvette 327 cam.

that motor would be a nice motor to have. Add that XE268 cam and you will see more power from that combo. XE is much better grind than the others

Let's see now....you're 16....own a race car.....have $500 in your pocket.......oh yeah you're in sad shape.
Oh yeah, that's much better.
You just drop that in your RS you'll be reallllllllll happy. Out of the box, I'd say that it's got enough power to get you started breaking things.

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
I do agree, $500 is a poor amount. but I also want you and other people to know that Im working for the money, trying my best, Im working two jobs, on top of school, working everyday, and only get the most 6 hours of sleep at night, I could make the money in three months for the new engine, but I wanted to spend the $500 on working on my exhaust, new tires, and some new parts on the engine, so it can still run till I get the new engine. I'm not trying to be mean, I just want to let you know, because I know alot of people on this board deals with newbie 16 year olds thinking they can get good performance parts for little money.
I really want that engine, and I would love it, its just, Im really consern about how the gas milage would be on that, even though next winter, Im gonna have to park it, because I know im not gonna able to afford the gas.\
(btw, everything that goes into this car, comes out of my pocket, my parents doesnt pay for anything on this car except half for my car payments.)

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
The second engine you listed would give good power and work well in a daily driver. The xe268 cam would provide additional hp, but the lift on that cam is marginal for the stock vortec heads. You would either need to have the heads machined for the additional lift or go with a different spring/retainer set such as the Crane Valve Spring Retainer Kit – P/N 10309-1 to provide for the additional lift.
All this just keeps adding to the cost. You may want to initially just go with that engine as is and then later as money becomes available set up to the better cam if you want more power.
good luck

Well, if you got them to pay half of your car payments (you have payments on a car this old??) maybe you can convince them to fork out half of the new engine payments!
Really im just kidding with you. Im only 19 and unemployed, so I am really scraping by right now. But knowing what it's like to be young and poor, if I were you I would just keep the motor you both got. Think of it like this - imagine you just spent all this money on the new motor, and put it in. The week later, your tranny goes boom. How you gonna feel now you just spent all your hard earned cash on a motor for a car you cant afford to fix?

I already tried asking them to help pay for half the engine, But they refused, because they got alot of other things that are needed to be payed, and they told me when I first got this car, I have to work for every penny for it.
so I gave up asking for money, so I worked for it, at the best I can, and I also agree with what you said about the tranny
I know the new engine would end up taring the stock tranny. I was looking at that article of who ever wrote about swapping a T56 6 speed manual into a camaro. I was thinking about doing that, but thats another $2000 or more x.x .....and it's cool afremont
I just like to let people know Im trying my best to work on this car on my own. Last edited by Demon_Eater; Mar 6, 2008 at 01:50 PM.

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
one thing to pay attention to is the fact that that motor has Vortec heads which mean you need a Vortec style intake manifold.
Drive and determination will get you there, believe me I know. My parents helped me a little with my first car, that was it. I bought it for 300 bucks (blown trans) and they bought me a trans rebuild for my birthday (only 500 dollars).

Re: Is this a pretty good cam...?
yeah, Im having a hard time trying to pick a good engine, then again, Im planning ahead of my self.
Does anyone know an good engine that would have about around just 300 hp, or maybe even more, in the range of $1500, to $2500?
Im also thinking what I may do is buy then engine, put a new cam in it, and let it sit in my shop till I get a T56 6speed manual, all th parts, so I can get it all in at once, instead of taking the engine out again.

I'd suggest you start with exhaust. Headers, cat-back, cat if you want for '86-'90 TPI single cat application. You'll feel that right away, and it will support future upgrades. That'll run you between $600-$1200, depending upon what you get and whether or not you use a cat.
After that, most any change would best wait until the 350 comes around. You could do a cam, but you might not want the same thing when you go 350. You could upgrade the heads after the cam, but you probably want 350-specific heads on the 350.
300 horse from a 305 is fairly simple, but harder with TBI. Decide what you're going to do about that. Fuel economy is bound to be better with TBI than it would be with carb.
Check the "Budget 350" sticky at the top of the TBI forum. You might find your answer there.

My engine is TBI, but I was plaining on like what my friend did with his new camaro was he got a 350 engine, and put the TBI intake and throttle body back on, and got the chip, sensors and those things for it, and later when he got the money, he got a edelbrock intake, and a holly four barrel carb, he is making about 320 horsepower, but he was going to sell the car anyway, it was just a project car for him to keep him busy.
I'll take a look at that sticky, it's kinda a pain in the rear when I have my mind set on one engine, and then some one points it out about a few things about it, and makes sense to me, and deside on another engine, same thing happens.. haha, I dont know if I will be satisifed on one engine, of either if its a nice engine, that eats alot of gas, and will brake my tranny, or a engine not worth putting money into, and still gotta mess with the tranny..
but oh well, I still have a few things I wanna get before I can start on my engine project, what will help alot though is that Im quiting one of my jobs (the one Im getting payed less) and go work full time at my other job (well... in my consideration of full time what I mean is, work every day of the week but still going to school.)
