engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

With my hooker long tubes i can no longer use my stock oil cooler so am looking for something to replace it with.

looking at two products on summit a derale piece and a flexalite high performance piece

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

seems to me the main difference is volume. For the extra 60 bucks is there any reason not to get the flex a lite one?

Also am i going to have issues with plumbing the lines that close to my exhaust tubes? last thing i need is to blow an oil line and have an engine fire.

The car is a DD during the summer but makes about 300rwhp and will see hot lapping at the drag strip as well as hopefully some solo1 action.

Well, you haven't gotten much attention here. I've never considered an oil cooler a "necessary" item, but I also only use synthetic oil.

Perhaps moving this back to the top will give it more visibility.

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

lol thanks

for normal driving i wouldnt consider it necessary either, but if im doing lapping on a solo1 course it could become an issue.

not to mention 150 bucks seems like cheap insurance on an engine youre abusing. Already spent 500 on a deep sump pan so might as well take that extra step.

these kits just make me nervous cause i dont think those hoses would much like being that close to my headers, the factory system of hard lines seems ideal but the outlet tube is right where the header is.

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

got a pic from the under side of the engine? I have my oil cooler lines running from the sandwich adapter right along side the block to the front of the bay and into my cooler. Now my cooler is mounted to the engine side of the radiator because i have pushers, i dont know where you are planning to put yours.

I have plenty of clearance from the exhaust, but i dont yet have LT's so i dont know how much of an impact that will make.

I used -10AN for my lines, my adapter was 1/2"NPT, a bit bigger. I dont know if the -AN line is better suited for heat vs rubber line, but it matches everything else so thats what i used.

LT's makes a big difference, the long tubes come down right beside the filter, thats the problem with the stock oil cooler is its a hard line and the long tube is right where the outlet is on the oil cooler block.

it could work fine but the aftermarket ones are the same screw in type and it seems like itd be hit or miss as to where the outlets are positioned on it. When it threads on they could be in a good spot, or they could be exactly where the factory ones are.

and sorry cant grab a pic right now, just moved to alberta and my cars still in ontario for another two weeks

In my mind, $8/qt synthetic oil is cheaper and more effective insurance, but for some reason that logic escapes 75% of the population.

$650/$8/qt = 81 quarts of oil. Enough for 5 or 6 seasons with a 5 quart pan. At the end of that time, your engine will still be in fine shape, saving you even more money.

Never mind, there I go again.

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

lol hard to argue that something like a royal purple is going to protect your engine.

the engine is on its first oil change since the break in and right now its got conventional in it, for some reason my shop insisted thats what they put in all the performance cars that come in there, think it was kendall 5-30 but i forget

thatll get changed out for synthetic this season however im looking for additional protection on top of that, i want hot lapping at the strip to be a complete non issue.

so back to my question, still looking for opinions on oil coolers with my LT's

the sandwich adapter i have can be aimed in any direction you want, there is a nipple that goes through the adapter and screws onto the engine, effectively sandwiching the adapter to the block aiming wherever you so desire. I believe they are all the same.

As for synthetic, i will probably go that route when i change fluids this spring at startup time, but will keep the cooler cause i like it, unless of course i loose the ability to use it when i get around to LT's and a new exhaust

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

i dont completly understand your description but if i understand it lets you move where the nipple is? Which brand are you using?

Thats the problem with the stock one is its solid and it only threads into the one position

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

The sandwich adapter is a solid piece with a hole through the center, not threaded.

there is also a pipe nipple with a hex nut on one end that slides through the adapter and screws onto the oil blocks oil filter adapter. So you can aim the sandwich adapter anywhere you want, then slide the nipple through and screw it onto the oil adapter, follow?

I dont even remember what brand it is, i bought it on ebay.

here is a pic from one of the ones you posted, the first one i think

arrow on left see the smooth bore inside the adapter. arrow on right see hex nut on nipple, there are female threads inside the smooth part of the nipple opposite the hex

Re: engine oil cooler with hooker LT's

ahh i get it, altho little confused on the fact that with the sandwich adapter between the filter and the block wouldnt that cover the threads the filter needs to screw on?

come one man....

look at the pic, the nipple fitting has male threads on the side with the hex nut, the filter threads on there.
