oil dip stick question:) 1983 Z28

Folks, I purchased a 1983 Z28 from my cousin and the first thing I know it needs is the complete oil dip stick setup. Right now I guess there is nothing there. It has a rebuilt engine that I haven't fired. 78 block, but it is still a passenger side setup. Where would I purchase the tube etc? Also, do you know if I can sneak it in there without lifting the engine back out? Thanks!!!

I think Mr Gasket, or moroso sells them. It's a universal SBC thing. I bought it for about $18 off summit I think. Chrome to boot Or you can get a fancy shmancy Lokar one for $80. Your call (I can think of other ways to spend $60, like a 60oz of vodka maybe...)
You should be able to get it in there without lifting the engine. Driving it into place will be awkward. I think I grabbed an old 1/2" or 9/16" wrench, shoved the 12 point end over the bulge, and hammered on the wrench to drive it down. Drive it down until the bulge rests on the block and you're done.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

If stock exhaust manifolds, the dipstick tube and manifold will want to be in the same place. Lokar flexible is the best option.

If headers, no problem. A parts store dip stick will be fine.
