help to remove starter

What is the best way to remove the starter in 1986 tpi z28 camaro. There is no room to drop it past the exaust. I am at my wits end with this car!

Remove wires & bolts, pull it forward away from the tranny, work it out vertically.

Re: help to remove starter

It should come out, you just have to jack around with it. I just changed mine and it took me about an hour to get it out. Try bringing it out snout first (vertically). You'll have to try positioning the solenoid different ways until it comes out. When it comes out, watch out it's heavy and it could cause serious injury to you.

Re: help to remove starter

Yea it will come out, i put a LT1 starter in Yesterday. It took about 2 hours trying to move it around so it would come out at one point i didnt think it would come out, once i got it orientated to a good spot i used a crow bar and pryed the exhaust a little and it fell out. If your putting a stock replacement back in, its gonna be just as a PITA as getting it out. If u have a mini starter or LT1 then it goes in quite easy. Took me 2 hours to get it out and about 10 min to have the new one put in and bolted down.

Re: help to remove starter

must be diff in maro's. There was no possible way mine was coming down in one peice. No wiggle room around the y pipe. at least not enough for it to drop. I had to disconnect the wires, take off the solenoid, unbolt the starter, and it drops right out. Reverse order to put the new one in. Its fun putting on a solenoid when you cant even see what your hand are doing.
