'85 Trans Am stalling/idle issues
Good morning!
My brother finally decided to get him self a F-body ('bout damn time!) but his 'bird is running into some issues...
When he first got it it was running great, pretty strong 350 TPI. The problem he's running into now is after it's been running for a little bit. THe car will idle normally, but once he gives it gas and it goes above about 2k RPM it sputters and struggles to run, if he lets off the gas it goes back to a normal idle, if he continues to try and give it gas it'll stall. The shop they took it to swapped plugs, wires, distrib, and the computer. None of those took care of the issue. Their only other suggestion was an issue with the harness, but I wanted to see if any of you had run into the issue before...They were going to charge 1k to take the dash out and test the harness...
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'd get a reading on fuel pressure under those conditions.
The chances of the problem being under the dash are pretty slim.
When they switched distributors, did that include coil?
Is the SES light coming on? Does the tach do anything funny during these times of misbehavior?

i would check the fuel pressure as well, the pump may be weak. You may also want to unbolt the cat and see if it helps any, it may be clogged.

I am not certain if they switched the coil out, I will have to check. The Tach seems normal when these "attacks" happen and the SES light is oddly "silent/off". I will check the fuel pressure later this week - Hopefully that'll be the solution. I'm glad to see that others thought the under-dash solution seemed odd as well.

Nope - still no go...The pressure was right where it was supposed to be, they had swapped out the coil, and I haven't gotten to check the cat...Since they stopped driving it with the issues, they un-insured it...So I'm waiting for 'em to insure it so I can get it over to my garage.

sounds like a bad shop to go to if they just start throwing parts at it and not actually diagnosing the issue.
i would check the fuel system. replace the filter if it hasnt been done its needs to anyway and check the fuel pressure.
