upgrading ignition system... mallory or MSD?

i have already called summit and learned that the summit ignition components are retagged/reboxed mallory components.

how does the summit/mallory compare to the MSD products.

the summit tech guy said that the mallory box is actually better because it is digital instead of analog and that it would operate cooler and be more accurate. the both have adjustable rev limiters and are similar as competitors get as far as specs.

which way should i go?

billit distributer $170

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

ignition box $170

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

SUMMIT TOTAL $340

OR i could go MSD

MSD billet distributer $233

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

MSD 6AL box $220

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

MSD TOTAL: $453

SO... is saving $113 and going mallory/summit worth it?

beyond new plugs, and good wires, what else would i need to install either one?

Re: upgrading ignition system... mallory or MSD?

That analog MSD stuff is starting to look pretty dated, isn't it?

MSD also has a line of newer technology digital boxes (the Digital-6 line for street applications) but they're about a $100 more than the old analog boxes.

I haven't used the Summit/Mallory stuff myself so I can't comment. I have used the Crane digital box, however, and it worked absolutely flawlessly for years under some pretty abusive conditions.

Re: upgrading ignition system... mallory or MSD?

one of the better things about the summit/mallory boxs is that it consumes less power and the output spark is significantly stronger than the msd. all of the units (mallory, summit, and msd) have a one year warranty, so thats not an issue.

here is a comparison of the summit units to the msd units (if the link works properly)

http://store.summitracing.com/compar...1&autoview=sku

i compared the mallory to the summit and all of the specs and numbers were identical, so they are definietly the same.

i would be interested in the digital msd box, but its $320 at summit, compared to the $170 for the summit/mallory and the specs are very similar.

I've used Mallory for 4 years of roadrace. The easily adjustable rev limiter and the cost were the reasons for choosing that brand. They are fine units, but I have had two failures, about 2 years apart, after I had done some welding on the car. The repair center used to be in Reno NV but has been moved. They charged me $30 to fix both failed units. I now have these as spares.

Re: upgrading ignition system... mallory or MSD?

I heard from friends of mine that dyno tested MSD boxes do not help unless you are running at high rpms or have a points type dizzy, I went with the pertronix HEI race dizzy w/mechanical advance and it works great even though my engine never races over 6500 RPMs.
