Lifters size

Greetings,

(and here we go, here we go, here we go again...)

Here we are, lifters are too big...I bought a Camshaft Kit to remplace a stock one on my 305, the problem is that they...don't fit, is there a way to fix it? changing the pushrods? or should I start asking the customer service for another set?

I'm still a newbie with this engine..

Thank you for reading and answering.

Re: Lifters size

well you have there a flat tappet and a roller lifter, neither will just swap out with the others, your 87 had a flat tappet cam? was the motor swapped?

Yes, it's weird, I was hoping finding some roller lifters here, why are they flat...Am I condemned to use flat then? those rollers are useless?

Re: Lifters size

can you take some pics of the engine? if there are 3 threaded bosses in the lifter gallery you can use the rollers with a few extra parts

Re: Lifters size

Stock SBC lifters all all the same diameter (.842") whether they are flat tappet or rollers. Now, you can't use a factory roller lifter in a flat tappet block, but you can use a flat tappet lifter in a factory roller block. They use different length pushrods as well. Factory flat tappet cams use 7.80" sticks. Factory roller cams use 7.20" sticks (don't quote me on that measurement, but I think it's right).

A picture of the lifter valley in your block would be very helpful here.

Re: Lifters size

I have read about durability but is there a significant diference in performances between flat and roller? by the way why are there like "marks" in the lifters valley? I mean the three holes where the spider is supposed to be.

Re: Lifters size

well im pretty sure you can drill and tap them and get a spider and dogbones and use it...its because that block was cast to be used as a roller or non roller block, it just wasnt finished because it was destined to be a non roller.....

In addition to the reliability factor, roller cams also have a great performance advantage over the flat tappet. The faster you can get the intake valve to maximum lift, the longer it can stay there before the piston comes rushing back up the cylinder to compress the air fuel mixture. If the goal is to load the cylinder with as much air and fuel as possible, the longer you are at maximum lift the better. Flat tappets require a smoother transition from the base circle of the cam to max lift, leaving less time for the lifter to dwell there. Roller lifters, on the other hand, can survive a much more abrupt transition resulting in extra time at max lift. If you compare a roller cam lobe to a flat tappet lobe, you can see the roller cam has a larger radius at its peak, holding the lifter at max lift for a longer duration

Re: Lifters size

That block won't take a factory-style roller cam. It's flat tappet ONLY. Or buy an aftermarket roller cam & lifters setup and convert that way. But that block WON'T take factory roller gear.

Re: Lifters size

I am just tearing down a retro motor I have everything you need to convert that engine to a roller engine. Engine only has 2 hrs on it and it has never been raced. I will make you an incredible deal because I really am running out of storage room for all the engines I have.
E-mail me if you are interested.

no im pretty sure damon is right u cant use the spider and dogbones after all cause i dont think the lifter bores are not tall enough, ull have to use the retro roller cam kits with the link bar roller lifters....

Re: Lifters size

that is correct the lifter bores are to tall for the stock roller lifters but they make roller lifters for the chevy 3800s that fit the bill perfectly when used with the factory dogbones and spider

Re: Lifters size

awww too bad that they won't work fit on this block...I might as well buy those flat lifters and at least I'll be sure eveything was done to be like this...bye bye extra HP...

Or not be negative and...

I've been looking around online shops and I can't find a retrofit kit that would fix my problem of the lifter bore with link bar, will those link bars resolve the bore problem or I definitly need to use the dogbones?

Wait...this is just a stupid question...I needed to edit this. You said that this block won't take my rollers lifters and I need specific ones.

If I decide to put again some flat tappet, hydraulic or mechanical? can I use any of them? what would be a good choice?

Thank you all for your patience and answers.

Re: Lifters size

there are specific stock lifters that are taller than the regular SBC lifter... with some modifications to your block you could run them but it is a bit of trouble to find the parts....

a linkbar setup with the tall lifters will work... make sure they are tall enough to use in your flat tappet block or you will run into the same problems you have now...

you can use either hyd or mech lifters in that block as long as they are flat without any modification... i personally would go with hyd less hassle sort of

Re: Lifters size

check this out, I bought some solid lifters on the net and when I got them I realized that...

As you can see on the picture the socket where the rods connect is lower than the old ones...(sorry I don't know the exact names of those parts) So, I mounted the lifters to see if they could fit, they do BUT I have to lower the rockers a lot maybe the rods are too shorts or I don't know, are there any consequences? what should I do? can it run like this or maybe change the rods?

Thank you.
