Best way to disable a car?

What is the best way to disable a car for long term storage to prevent theft?

Like under the hood, what can you disconnect that will prevent the car from starting that is relatively hidden.

I know you can pull the dist. wire, but i need some more ideas

Thanks.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

on firebirds there is a fuse near the battery that if removed will shut down computer. you will know the right one it's a blade fuse in its own housing. when pulled and key on there will be no engine light and car will not start.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

Disconnect Battery cables, battery, take the fuse out that was mentioned, you can also take the wire out that goes to the coil, if yours on not in the cap. Take out the rotor, ummm.... Disconnects throttle, or just the pedal, take out clutch button behind pedal (stick). Unplug wires that go into dizzy. Disconnect fuel pump, drain tank, Hell, you could even take ign wires if you want. There are TONS of ways to make sure no one can take the car.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

Maybe install a fuel pump cutoff switch and have it hidden.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

A hidden fuel pump cutoff is nice. You could always take the steering wheel.

Like anything, its not prevention, its deterrence. Make something else appear to be the easier target and they might leave yours alone. But do all those, and it will still be easy to hook+go.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

I'd pop the dist cap, take the rotor, and put the dist cap back on. Could also pop the shift plate off and disconnect the shifter connector.

Or take the computer out.

Put one of those big yellow wheel locks or clamps on it (the kind the police put on a car).

Re: Best way to disable a car?

If I wanted to help prevent my car from being stolen from a storage unit.
I would disconnect the fuel pump at that connector in the back of the car that is behind the rear seat area.
Then order a wheel boot or two, or take the wheels off and put it up on blocks.

Like it has been said, that won’t prevent a flat bed tow truck, but will prevent the old smash and grab.

The goal isn’t to prevent car theft that is impossible; the goal is to make your car not worth the effort.

P.S. If you are going to store your car in a storage unit, find one in a decent area.

seriously, this is the best way. If the car is in long term storage, it should not be sitting one the tires anyway. the tires will get flatspots. Just put the car on jack stands or blocks, take the wheels home. Take the battery too, it will just die in teh car anyway. if you feel ambitious, and have the tools, take the steering wheel.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

Park it in its space, turn the front wheels (to make it hard for a flatbed haul-away), lock the ignition/steering column, and take the wheel:

Even if someone breaks out the steering column to defeat the ignition and steering lock, straightening the wheels is going to be pretty tough.

Also where is the ignition coil wire everyone talks about? I have no idea what it looks like...

Re: Best way to disable a car?

Switch the coil wire in the distributor cap with a plug wire.

It all looks the same.

Leave the keys in the car.

The car will not crank but will fire intermittly.

Thief will think the car is broken and in the shop for repairs.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

My car has something nifty the previous owner wired up for it. You cannot start the car without pulling the headlight **** out which obviously turns the headlights on, The horn will sound if you turn the key and not pull it out, you can drive with the headlight **** pushed in like normal. I cant tell you how many times i forgot to tell mechanics to do this and i get phone calls saying "how the hell do you start your car". its simple and along with the other mentioned tactics it works for anti theft all season.

And oh, dont be stealing my car now. lol

Its pretty interesting, i have been meaning to see how its wired up but i keep forgetting to when i have my dash apart. PLus it works very well, and considering out cars were once the most stolen cars in america i would think its a good investment. I though it was a factory anti theft system untill a month ago, plus i told my insurance company about it an they gave me a discount. They counted it as a premium anti theft system or something like that.

Re: Best way to disable a car?

How about a car alarm or the club. i'd go with that cause it's the easiest and car alarms make you look cool when your walking away and you arm it in front of ppl especially hot chicks. I don't worry about ppl wanting to steal my cars cause my saturn is a pile, they can have it, and my formula has a fuel pump switch. however i have had things stolen out of my cars. some kid stole my leather jacket and my curve colone.

It's funny, when ever i get insurance set up i always lie and save money. i always tell them i have a car alarm, daytime running lights, all kinds of air bags, yata yata..

Your car would be like the house Richard Pryor bought in the movie "Moving."

No spark plug wires, no spark plugs, no distributor, no shifter, no steering wheel, car on blocks.....

I would recommend one of these for any F-body fan: http://www.ravelco.com/index.htm

You should remove the battery anyway when storing long-term, so start there.

After that, make it hard to tow like Vader suggested. Removing the driveshaft would just make it easier to tow away.
