Hard to tell. What do the old spark plugs look like.

Re: Sparkplug not going in. What is this in the hole? (pic)

I don't have the one from that hole...
But the old plugs from the other holes are carbon covered black with eroded electrodes...
I wasn't the one who took em out. The guy before me did...so who knows what happened...could have even broke off ,and that's the leftovers.
It kinda looks like flattened threads to me.

It appears to be a helicoil that started to back out? Can you get your hand back there to feel it?

When I felt it..it felt kinda like a broken off hollow piece of thin tube.
Does that make sense?
Nothing threads into it...so who knows.

Have to agree with Badazta87. Looks like an old helicoil backing out.

I'll 3rd the helicoil.... does it feel like a coiled up peice of stiff wire?

I was thinking helicoil but it doesn't really look like that. It could be a whole lot of carbon.

I know it's a bad suggestion but you should pull the head.

Bah. Wire brush it up, blow it off, and try to get a better look at it. A magnifying glass would help.

I also think it could be a helicoil. A plug came out, so one should thread back in, unless the coil backed out with it.

I'm trying to avoid pulling the head...considering it will cost me a couple hundred bucks as soon as i do even if it doesn't work. Head gasket, intake/exhaust manifold gasket, coolant...
I'd rather figure it out if possible with the head on the engine.

I think it's a broken plug bottom, Can you get a plug thread chaser in there? they cost approx. $10 just make sure you have some source to catch the shavings so they don't go in the cylinder.

You think maybe its the last thread off the plug? Thats a good possibility too if the plugs were that corroded.

Try to get some better light in there, maybe cleaned up a little. If its a thread, you could probably pull it out with some needle nose.

Re: Sparkplug not going in. What is this in the hole? (pic)

Have you tried to backing out what looks like a helicoil? It looks like there is enough to grab with needle nose. Roll up a small piece of cotton fabric, like a piece off a t-shirt, push some down the spark plug hole then spray what looks like a helicoil with WD or Liquid Wrench, let it soak and go after it with the needle nose. Try not to get any crap down the cylinder. Make sure to leave enough material hanging out so you can pull it out when you are done. The last time I had to do something similar, I put a small adapter on my shop vac and sucked all sort of debris out of the cylinder before starting it. That motor went another 100k+.

Re: Sparkplug not going in. What is this in the hole? (pic)

Well, we had a guy over a week ago, and the problem was it was the threaded end of a sparkplug. The end broke off, and the rest stayed in there...So now it's fine. Sounds much better on 8 cylinders....ahaha

Me too. The head does not have to come off to repair a damaged/stripped sparkplug hole... if you have compressed air available.

basically he used an acetylene torch, some type of penatrating oil/etc, and an ex-out tapped in with a little hammer. heat, squirt, tap, turn, repeat.
