Surging idle and slow takeoff
Hi .I have done searches and no luck so I'm starting a thread . I bought this 92 Bird with 305 TBI . It is stock as far as I know . My problem is a surging idle , and on take off if I give it only a small amount of gas it will sound like a miss and kind of buildup to a more normal takeoff . At a stoplight the idle might sit normal for a minute , then it will sputter and almost die , then normal then sputter , and on and on . I have tried changing the vaccuum hoses . No help . I pulled the IAC out and cleaned it and put it back in and it hseemed to fix it , then 10 minutes of driving and right back to where it was . So I bought a new IAC and replaced it and it seemed to be fized , then I did more driving , and it started again . I thought for sure the IAC was the problem , but now I don't know . I didn't know that you had to go through a procedure to reset the IAC but was reading on here and saw an article about that , and I tried that too . But I am not positive that it worked because I tried to adjust the idle speed and the screw was missing . But I did the procedure and it didn't help . Any ideas ?

My 1991 Z28 was sputtering, surging, slow taking off, and ran like crap.... One day it died and would not start again, I found out one of the injectors went out. If you ever have to replace an injector and they are old, do them all. Mine went out, I replaced it then another went out the same day. I did them all...

Yeah I did look at the injectors while it was running and they both looked like they were spraying a mist and not sputttering or dripping . I will check them again though , it is not really easy to see the spray pattern on these TBI injectors because they sit so low in the bowl . I am wondering if I could have messed the new IAC up by not doing the reset procedure after initiallly putting it in , but noone has chimed in on that yet .This all really sucks because I have a parts car I bought in the garage I am swapping the 350 from it into my car , but I'm waiting on some of the parts to sell before I tear the other car apart .And it is a carbed 350 so it doesn't have parts to rob .

Re: Surging idle and slow takeoff
Well I found out the problem today . I ran a fuel pressure check the other day , and I had a steady 4 PSI . Need 12 - 15 for TBI . So today I finally pulled the tank . And lo and behold , it was that little 1 inch rubber hose that is inside the gas tank , connecting the fuel pump to the metal fuel line . It had a slit in it about a half inch long . I have been reading on here about this little hose for a while now . So tomorrow I'll put a new pump , strainer , and little hose on it . 1 more thing . I figured a way to drop the tank without removing hardly any suspension parts . I only had to remove the panhard support bar ( the upper panhard bar that has a bolt on one side and 3 bolts on the other side ) as far as suspension parts . Most people are removing the rear end . I didn't want to do that . So I decided to try something different and easier . I pulled the tank down as far as I could after removing the gas door and neck suport , the shield , the 3 hoses and vent tube , the fuel pump electrical connection , the straps and the panhard support . Pulled the tank as far to the passenger side as I could , and then used a sawzall to cut the filler tube . I will use a thick hard rubber sleeve with 2 hose clamps to put it back together . This took way less time than removing the rear . I will try and post pics soon .

jreze8: I am having what appears to be very similar issues as you describe above. Can you give me any further details as to how it ran? Or check out this thread and see if my symptoms looks similar to yours?
